Those who want to unlock a secret boss in Everhood need to find three gems. Here's where to snag the Ruby, Aquamarine, and the Emerald.

Everhood is not your traditional rhythm game. To be fair, it's not your traditional game in any sense. It's a downright trippy adventure, littered with a colorful cast of characters and oozing with style. It's also a rhythm game at heart, so it features a killer soundtrack (which is honestly better than a lot of rhythm games on the market). All of this is capped off by a pretty enthralling story. It's no wonder it's been so well-received on Steam, with an overwhelmingly positive status as of this writing.

The unique title is also deceptively complex. There are some interesting sidequests to undergo and some secret battles to unearth. One example pertains to the Statue found inside the Cosmic Hub. By finding three well-hidden gems, you can interact with the statue and engage in a hidden fight (with an absolutely Meta Boss). Finding the gems is easier said than done, so here's a look at where they are and how to snag them.

  • Head left from the starting area of the Mushroom Forest.
  • Unlock the door with the golden key.
  • Defeat the enemy.
  • Open the door with the stolen arm.

The blue aquamarine is located in the Mushroom Forest, near the starting area, but you'll need the golden key and the stolen arm before you can access it. From the first area, head to the left until you spot a locked door (unlocked with the golden key). If you follow the path past the doorway, you'll eventually happen upon a jump rope. Interacting with the rope will toss you into a bass-boosted fight. Defeat your opponent and you'll see a new path open before you. The last door standing between you and the blue aquamarine is at the end of the path but you'll need the stolen arm to open it. The gem is just past the door in the middle of the room.

  • Head to the Mushroom Forest and find the Forest Spirit.
  • Find the 7 Mushrooms.
  • Speak to the Forest Spirit.
  • Defeat the Thin Brown Mushroom.

The red ruby is also found in the Mushroom Forest but the quest to snag it is a bit more involved. The Forest Spirit will open a secret path for you but only after you've managed to find all 7 mushrooms within the area. After you've done so, talk to the Forest Spirit again and follow the newly uncovered path. At the end, you'll meet a rather strange, rather thin, mushroom, who will challenge you to a fight. Beware, the battle is intense and filled with a variety of mind-bending angles and field-of-view changes. Once you manage to defeat the thin mushroom, you'll be rewarded with the Ruby.

  • Travel to the Shop in Midnight Town.
  • Open the locked chest with the golden key.
  • Defeat the boss before the song ends.

The green emerald is found in Midnight Town and comes with a caveat. Like the other two gems, you'll need to go through a battle with an enemy but this fight is more about speed and efficiency. You'll have to do more than just survive. In the Midnight Town Shop, you'll find a locked chest that can be opened with your handy golden key. Opening the chest will trigger a fight with the Light Being, who is much tougher than he looks. Worse, you'll have to beat him (reduce his health to zero) before the song ends. Failure to do so will lock you out from receiving the Emerald and you'll need to reload your last save and try again. Once he goes down, the emerald is yours.

  • Return to the Cosmic Hub
  • Enter the three gems in the cat-faced statue.

The three gems can be placed into the cat-faced statue in the Cosmic Hub. Make sure you're prepared, though, because slotting the gems will trigger one of the most difficult boss fights in the entire game. You might want to save this fight for last and get as much practice a possible. The song is fast, the "notes" are plentiful, and the boss doesn't go down easy. If you're looking for a way to truly test your Everhood skills, this is one boss fight you'll definitely want to tackle.
