When dealing with demons in rural areas, witches will likely have to visit farmsteads and other structures that become plagued by the supernatural. In Black Book, by Russian indie developer Morteshka, players taking the role of a newly initiated witch will have to tackle such a task by clearing out the demons dwelling within a northern windmill.

The Main Task in Black Book's Prologue chapter will require players to get into the haunted structure, and there are a few different ways to do so. These different methods will require Vasilisa, the young witch who the player controls, to explore the area around the windmill for clues and tools.

Upon examining the only door into the windmill, players will discover that it is locked, however, the lock shutting the door is old and decrepit, meaning that players can break it to gain entry. There are 2 ways to do this, although, both options will require sacrificing the mentioned item: either use a magical Break-Herb to break the lock or smash it open with an axe.

Players, unfortunately, cannot return to previous areas to explore or pick up missed loot, so be sure to explore every area carefully before moving on. However, if one has not yet reached the windmill, they can head to Penesherskaya Ravine, where they can make a decision that will result in them gaining a single Break-Herb.

In the clearing here, players must surround a snake's nest with rocks so that the serpent finds and uses a Break-Herb to destroy the enclosure of stones. Afterward, players will be rewarded with the very same Break-Herb, which they can use in a number of ways, including breaking the lock on the windmill's door.

However, players should note that the Break-Herb can be implemented as a single-use consumable in a battle that completely removes an individual enemy's Defense on the turn that it is used. This can be extremely helpful against more resilient foes, so one may want to save the Break-Herb for such an occasion.

To the left of the windmill's locked door will be a small area that Vasilisa can explore. One of the items that can be found here is an equippable tool called the Old Axe. It grants a small bonus in that it gives the player +1 max HP, but has another, arguably more important, function.

As indicated by one of the options presented when interacting with the windmill's locked door, players can use the Old Axe to break through the lock, however, as hinted at by the axe's description, this will cause it to break.

If players do not want to use either the Break-Herb or Old Axe to destroy the lock on the front door, they can check around the back of the windmill to find an interaction point that lets Vasilisa climb into a gap in the decrepit outer wall.

While this route will not break an item, it will cost some HP, as Vasilisa will stumble a bit and lose 3 hit points, though will make it inside otherwise unharmed. Be warned, however, that a powerful demon lurks nearby, so players should heal immediately after entering the windmill if they use this entrance.
