God of War Director Cory Barlog Had 'No Idea' What He Was Doing on God of War 2

God of War director Cory Barlog celebrates the fourteen year anniversary of God of War 2 by opening up about the early experience of directing.

It's now been fourteen years since God of War 2 first released for PS2, and Director Cory Barlog decided to celebrate by sharing a little insight on the development process of the classic title. In the game designer's usual style, Barlog gave the majority of the credit to the team at Santa Monica Studio for the title's success.

The new insight came as a response to a tweet by The Game Awards that congratulated God of War 2 on the fourteen-year anniversary and for having pushed the original title into the huge series it is now. Barlog also elaborated on the process of understanding how to manage a team as a game director with another comedic addition to the original reply.

In Barlog's initial response, the God of War director mentions that he had "NO IDEA" what he was doing while taking on the director responsibilities for God of War 2. The director equated the experience to being blindsided with having to perform a musical that he had not only not rehearsed for, but had never even heard of. However, considering how well the game came out, Barlog was clearly able to figure out least some of what needed to be done while directing Santa Monica Studio alongside the series creator.

In a following tweet, Barlog also conceded to having walked away with the faintest idea of what acting like a director was like, only learning what fully filling that role meant years later. It's an expectedly humble statement from a developer who uses most of his social standing to heap praise on the studio that he works with and other colleagues in the field. Granted, this only has fans even more hyped to see what Barlog and Santa Monica Studio has for the next God of War 2, or rather number 5 depending on who's counting.

While it can't be argued that triple-A development is solely the result of one person's work, and is instead a product of the effort of an entire studio, Barlog could still afford to take a bit of a bow on this one. With God of War's original director David Jaffe having given Barlog the top spot for the sequel, there was certainly a lot on the new director's shoulders for the new title. Still, the positive attitude that Barlog displays through his Twitter is a welcome showing of someone in that type of position of power doting on those he works with.

God of War is available now for PS4 and PS5.
