As the total number of Among Us players dip from November, Among Us continues to enjoy breakout success despite a stacked December.

The success story of Among Us has always been an inspirational one. Released quietly in June 2018 for mobile devices and November that same year on PC, Among Us was mostly absent from the public eye. It wasn't until mid-2020 with the help of popular Twitch streamers, like Sodapoppin, that the game was discovered by a wide audience. Weeks later, it became a smash hit.

Contributing to the popularity of Among Us was how much of a social game it was. Among Us is in the same league as other "party games" like the Jackbox Games and other Mafia-style games. Its popularity skyrocketed as months went on, with several citing Among Us as the most popular game in 2020. As the year went on, however, the player count took a dip.

For the month of December, the player numbers of Among Us fell from November's peak according to data from SuperData Research. Since its rise in popularity in the summer, Among Us has had a substantial increase in player numbers. The month of November was pivotal for Among Us, reaching over half of a billion in total active players. While numbers began to wane in December, it still remained 2.8 times as popular as the next most-popular title, Roblox.

Part of the reason was due to a highly successful Switch launch in mid-December. With the Switch being one of the most popular consoles in 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic and the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons last year, Innersloth had an established player base to port their highly successful title on. The mobility of the Switch and the accessible touch-screen controls, mirroring that of the mobile port of Among Us served to be a successful formula.

December was also Cyberpunk 2077's month in terms of the number of sales and player base. With over 10 million digital copies sold within the first month, Cyberpunk 2077 broke records as the largest digital game launch ever. The hype and controversy surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 forced Among Us to take a momentary backseat. However, Among Us, to this day, continues to see success in terms of player count and overall influence.

The influence that Among Us has on its player base and outside of their designated player base is monumental. Among Us is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to video games. It's a popular social game among friends and a popular game for streamers to interact with fans. It is even used as a game to spread awareness of social matters such as US representative AOC's stream to encourage players to vote.

While not as monumental as Cyberpunk 2077's 10 million digital sales, the Switch port of Among Us sold over 3 million copies in less than a month. For a game that has been viral since the summer, making a third of the number of digital sales in comparison to a highly-anticipated AAA title on a console port is an impressive feat for Innersloth.
