Battlefield 6 is speculated to have expanded-upon destructible environments, and DICE really needs to deliver on its core premise.

The Battlefield games have always been about battling enemies in some of the most expansive settings, all the while featuring a varied assortment of weaponry and tools to help the player create their own unique war stories. While Battlefield 5 reviews may not have been the best of the franchise, Battlefield 6 may prove to be the turning point for the series and a return to its former status.

Fans of the franchise are currently busy speculating about the different possibilities as to how Battlefield 6 could be an evolution of the formula, and one such rumor/speculation suggests that Battlefield 6 would include better destructibility mechanics. This has seemingly been hinted at by DICE, though that's no promise either. While it remains to be seen how such a thing pans out, DICE should take the opportunity to make this a meaningful part of the gameplay loop and not just a gimmick.

Battlefield is no stranger when it comes to featuring destructible environments, and it seems that the franchise instead thrives on such a feature. The first Battlefield game, Battlefield 1942, proved to be an influential title for its time, mostly due to the destruction feature and the large-scale battles. Later entries in the franchise would continue to build upon the mechanics, with the Frostbite engine allowing for more possibilities for destruction in real-time, first seen in Battlefield: Bad Company.

Battlefield 4 also features a popular map where players can take down a giant skyscraper in the center of the map, called the Seige of Shangai. While this might be a noble concept and one that did carry Battlefield for a long time, it seems that the next entry in the series needs to elevate the mechanic in an effort to renovate the series' formula.

Additionally, Battlefield 6 will be the first game to be released on the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5. Unlike the competition and even Battlefield's previous releases, Battlefield 6 may be be skipping cross-gen releases in favor of a next-gen-only game. This could potentially give the developer enough time to maximize destructibility within the game and make it an essential part of the experience, while also simultaneously allowing the physics to be as detailed and accurate as possible.

Battlefield 6 rumors also state the existence of natural disasters such as floods, tornados, and storm to occur at certain points in certain maps. This could also tie into the destructible environments as they could seemingly catalyze such events, or outright even cause entire buildings to break down. This might pose a challenge with the implementation, as such events could ultimately turn out to be more of a hassle than something a team might use as a tactical advantage.

Regardless, Battlefield 6 is ultimately a great chance for DICE and EA to reinvigorate interest in the franchise with new and innovative mechanics to up the ante for player-created chaos. Destructible environments have a lot of potential that can be capitalized upon, and fans are zealously waiting out for their speculations to turn out to be true.

Battlefield 6 is in development for unspecified platforms.
