Far Cry 6 antagonist Anton Castillo appears to have more in common with Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5 than Vaas from Far Cry 3.

A rumor has been circulating that Far Cry 3's Vaas will appear in Far Cry 6. Vaas' actor Michael Mando has even teased as much before, at least his return to the role, but there is still little evidence that the character will appear in the next game. Overall, it seems incredibly unlikely at least in this game.

In fact, players hoping to get a villain like Vaas will likely be disappointed. From what has been revealed so far, Far Cry 6's Anton Castillo has more in common with Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5 and New Dawn than Far Cry 3's main villain.

Anton Castillo is the iron-fisted dictator of Yara, the Cuba-inspired setting for the upcoming game. His father was also the president of the country, and fifty years before the events of the game, Anton witnessed his father's execution during a revolution. Since then, he has believed that his family alone can restore Yara to the "paradise" he believes it once was. To that end, he is preparing his young son Diego to take over as his heir.

In Far Cry 6's cinematic trailer, Anton explains his beliefs to his son. Speaking of the Yaran people, he tells Diego that he must "clutch them nice and tight, or we all go boom." At the same time, Far Cry 5's Joseph Seed has genuinely convinces himself that he was chosen by God to save people from the apocalypse, and at the very least, his prediction that this end is nigh is proven right in the "resist" ending and Far Cry New Dawn. In both cases, the villains have strong ideologies based on an assumed outcome.

For Joseph, this is the end of the world; for Anton, it is the destruction of his country. The possibility remains that the plot of Far Cry 6 will prove Anton right. In Far Cry 4, players join a revolution that protagonist Ajay Ghale can become completely disillusioned with and abandon. It likely that new player character Dani Rojas will be given some reasons to question their revolution in Far Cry 6 as well.

Unlike Far Cry 4's villain, it doesn't seem like Anton Castillo would ever willingly give up his power. Anton's brand of self-belief is more similar to Joseph's declaration that he is the chosen one. Even the slogan on Anton's propaganda posters -"reconstruct paradise" - poses his regime as the only force able to redeem humanity, at least in Yara. In comparison, Joseph Seed's cult is named "Project at Eden's Gate." This suggests Joseph believes that, like Anton, he was sent to return his people to a paradise they are responsible for losing.

Vaas explicitly rejects the possibility that he could be the chosen one sent to lead his people. He rejects his sister Citra's attempts to make him the "Ultimate Warrior" of the Rakyat tribe. Instead, "the coward Vaas" is replaced by player character Jason Brody, though he too can reject the call in one of Far Cry 3's endings.

Beyond his "definition of insanity" speeches, it's never really made clear what Vaas believes. Vaas never actually justifies his actions, and his acceptance that he is a sadistic megalomaniac ends up being more honest than Joseph Seed's justification. At the end of Far Cry New Dawn, Seed admits, even to himself, that he was never God chosen at all and asks the player character to execute him for his crimes.

There's no way to know if Anton Castillo will have such a change of heart until the game releases. However, like Joseph - and unlike Vaas - Anton has been shown to rationalize his extreme actions. Though Giancarlo Esposito's performance as Anton will help distinguish the character, Ubisoft will have to tread carefully to make sure that Anton's arc isn't too similar to Joseph's after two games with him.

Far Cry 6 is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
