Cheaters using codes from the workshop are able to bring match-breaking abilities into ranked play, making it a nightmare for other teams.

When the Overwatch Workshop was introduced, it was celebrated as a way to mix up the game. Fast forward to now, and cheaters are finding a way to exploit the mode by bringing some of the Workshop enhancements into Overwatch's ranked play, which is causing some huge problems.

The cheating has been captured on multiple Twitch clips, including one by Brian "Kephrii" St. Pierre. Kephrii and his team were on the Nepal map when they engaged the enemy team in the center. After what appeared to be a decent amount of damage, they all suddenly realized that the opposing team had no health bars. Some teammates were confused and had no idea that this was an issue, but Kephrii mentioned it's been reported to be happening.

Whenever there is a game, there are bound to be cheaters, but Overwatch has often exposed and removed cheaters. Now, it appears the game is starting to work against itself with the ability to access these Workshop codes during other types of matches. While the Workshop has caused some headaches for these matches, it still has a lot of value. It gives players the power to use their creativity to bring to life modes and modifiers that even the Overwatch developers may not have thought of.

The Workshop allows players to create custom scripts to change how Overwatch works. One of the first examples that Blizzard provides in the introduction to the Workshop is a way to make players catch on fire if they're standing still on the floor. This can be done by utilizing some simple rule statements, marking one instance of changing the game mechanics. One could make it so that all players are invincible, or that damage is greatly increased. These scripts can be shared across the internet for people to play different types of game modes.

While an interesting creative tool, the Overwatch Workshop bug needs to be handled right away. The legitimacy of competitive play is important for games like Overwatch, where competitive modes are considered the way to play. If allowed to continue, it begs the question of how fair the game is. While Overwatch is looked at as a competitive first-person shooter, players will leave if they feel that matches are missing a level of fairness. With Overwatch 2 still in development, making sure this issue is solved has to be a focus.

Overwatch is now available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
