This week, an unexpected entrant appeared on Steam's Weekly Global Top Seller's list, with Euro Truck Simulator 2 breaking into the top 10. After the release of the Iberia DLC, fans flocked to the game in droves and pushed the increasingly popular truck simulator into an exclusive club.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 made headlines earlier this year when the developers implemented trucks delivering COVID-19 vaccines in an event called Hauling Hope. In the discussion that followed, a statement by developer SCS Software was misconstrued by fans to label its staff anti-vaxxers. At that point, Euro Truck Simulator 2 had already been growing in popularity among a niche group of loyal fans, but with the limelight briefly shining on the often-neglected truck simulator genre, fans began to look into a game they may have otherwise overlooked.

The Iberia DLC takes fans to the Iberian Peninsula where they will be able to explore both Madrid and Lisbon as they travel throughout Spain and Portugal, respectively. On top of ancient medieval castles and famous statues, fans will be able to visit real-life landmarks like the Guadiana International Bridge that connects Southern Spain to Portugal. It is by far the game's largest update yet considering the 580,000 square kilometer size of the Iberian Peninsula, so it makes sense this would gain traction on Steam.
Along with the Iberia DLC, SCS Software announced a #CruisingIberia event that challenges players to various tasks around the peninsula. With a future DLC planned to take players to Russia, Euro Truck Simulator 2 could return to Steam's Top Seller's list sometime in the future. For now, the game enjoys the company of mega-hits like Valheim, Sea of Thieves, and Outriders.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 is available on PC.
