For some video game fans, the name Temtem may not have come up in some time. Despite this, many other players have enjoyed the online multiplayer title, with some even declaring it one of the best multiplayer games of 2020.
Temtem is an MMORPG that is heavily inspired by the Pokemon franchise, with a very similar premise. Players collect Temtems, keep them in cards, and summon them to battle other Temtems. It could be called a Pokemon clone, but only in the same way that many first-person shooters were called Doom clones in the past. Those who want Pokemon in an evolving, online format have allowed Temtem to continue to grow, and this week it's growing even more.

Temtem is adding the new Cipanku Island on April 13. This island will come complete with new activities, a teleportation feature, and even the first Mythical Temtem for players to encounter. Presumably this is somewhat similar to a Legendary or Mythical Polemon, although how catching it in an MMORPG will work is unclear. The fact that Temtem is continuing to grow with additions like these ensure its place in the list of anime-style MMORPGS worth checking out.
This is the first major Island update since the previous one last July which introduced the island of Kisiwa. This does not mean developers have been idle, however, as Temtem has received many quality-of-life updates and new features over the past year. Many of these have been at the behest of the community, suggesting that Temtem's devs are listening to their players. If that continues to be the case, it could ensure Temtem's longevity, even if major content updates come slower than other games.
Those who want to check out a Pokemon-style game that changes up the formula could consider giving Temtem a look. While Pokemon is well established and does some things better, Temtem has definite selling points over Pokemon that cannot be ignored.
Temtem is not alone in being a Pokemon-like game either. Other titles like Monster Crown are similarly trying to expand on the Pokemon formula by taking it in different directions. Monster Crown in particular hails itself as an "adult" Pokemon game, featuring darker subject matter than either Pokemon or Temtem. Where these games will go in the future is anyone's guess, but if they do well enough, a whole new genre could thrive.
Temtem is available now on PC and PS5. Ports are in the works for the Switch and Xbox Series X/S.
