Over the years Final Fantasy 14 has established itself as one of the go-to MMORPGs. Available on both PlayStation and PC, Square Enix has cultivated a devoted playerbase that continues to support the game. With the launch of PlayStation 5, the developers are bringing a host of next-generation upgrades to Final Fantasy 14.
With its initial release in 2013, the MMO originally came out for PlayStation 3. Since that time, there have been multiple expansions and tweaks improving the world of Eorzea for fans. Now that PlayStation 5 offers more powerful hardware than available previously, Square Enix is updating the game's specs. With the Final Fantasy 14 PS5 open beta starting tomorrow, the developer has released some more information on what players can expect.

One big enhancement coming to the next-gen version involves various graphics settings. Those enjoying Eorzea's world can toggle between 4K (2160p) / WQHD (1440p) / and Full HD (1080p), which scales to the TV's output. However, it sound like framerate is a bit less consistent depending on which resolution mode is enabled. For WQHD and Full HD, the game runs at 60 FPS, but at 4K fans should expect around 40 FPS. Even when gathering in areas with huge amounts of players, Project Manager Shoichi Matsuzawa told PlayStation Blog he expects nothing lower than 30 FPS.
That is not all though, as the team at Square Enix is bringing plenty of additional features. The UI, originally designed for 720p, is seeing a update to menu, action bars, and inventory resolution. Thanks to the PS5's SSD loading times, logging into and teleporting around the massive world will be significantly improved. Plus, the developers incorporated instances of haptic feedback for the DualSense controller, as well as 3D audio. Starting April 13, there is an open beta for the PS5 version which any player can try out without having to switch to new characters or servers.
With Final Fantasy 14 already ranking as one of the best MMOs to play in 2021, bringing on next-generation features is a huge boon. Players will be getting everything from resolution buffs to faster loading times, and all of these aspects should make Eorzea that much more enjoyable to explore. Unlike some titles, there is no additional cost these benefits either, so anyone with a PS5 can join in and experience the game.
Though, with PlayStation 5 stock still difficult to find in 2021, not everyone can take part. Even with all the resolution options to choose from, many parts of the game will also likely still look dated due to coming out close to a decade ago. Nevertheless, fans of Final Fantasy 14 will be able to view a whole new world once the open beta releases tomorrow.
Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC and PS4, with a beta launching for PS5 on April 13.
