Based on a Chinese retail site listing, the Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor offers double the level of brightness from the previous model.

As any diehard PC gamer knows, having a good monitor is one of the many tools a player needs for an unforgettable gaming experience. Just recently, Samsung showed off its computer gaming capabilities by showcasing the new Odyssey G9 monitor's brightness levels.

According to Chinese online retailer Taobao, the upgraded G9 computer gaming monitor with a Quantum MiniLED might be available within the next few months. The G9 has a 49 inch VA MiniLED panel that can emit 5120 x 1440 resolution with a refresh rate of 240Hz. Additionally, the Odyssey G9 monitor supports G-Sync and FreeSync, just like the previous monitor.

To compliment the sheer size of the monitor and meet the HDR10 standard, the Odyssey G9 monitor hits a minimum of 2000 nits of brightness. This will be one of the first PC monitors ever to hit this level of brightness, going 1,000 nits over the previous model. For context, most high-end HDR televisions max out at around 2,000 nits.

For those who don't know, 1 Nit is roughly the light of one candle per square meter on a screen. So having 2,000 nits is essentially like having the light from 2,000 candles per square meter. This is important for making sure the screen display is brighter than its surroundings so it can be clearly readable. It is also relevant to mention that the Odyssey G9 monitor also has 2,048 local dimming zones. This kind of technology is common in high-end TVs and is used for improving the black levels of an image.

While it might seem excessive to some, this level of the screen brightness settings is important to the HDR function of the monitor. The brightness level allows the screen to display the darkest and brightest parts of the frame in greater contrast. Luckily, this high brightness level also doesn't have to be utilized all the time, just when HDR content is being displayed. However, gamers can rest comfortably knowing that they will be able to play or watch anything comfortably in any lighting conditions without any glare.

Currently, the Odyssey G9 monitor is listed on Taobao at 29,999 RMB, which is essentially 4,600 USD. It is set for a June release date in Asia, but there is no information yet about whether or not it is coming to the European or North American market. Hopefully, whenever the monitor does come out to the public, PC gamers everywhere should be able to get their money's worth out of the monitor and play games with incredible graphics.
