WWE 2K22 has been officially confirmed, and while there are several options for the cover star, WWE legend Edge could be the right choice.

WWE 2K22 was officially revealed during WWE's WrestleMania 37 event. The trailer showed off Rey Mysterio hitting his finishing move, the 619, on Cesaro, and it seemed to boast improved visuals over the last entry in the series. While a lot of details remain to be seen, there's one chip worth discussing right now. Every time a new WWE game is announced, there is usually debate surrounding who should be featured on the cover, and WWE 2K22 seems to be no exception to this. While WWE certainly has several stars who should be considered, WWE legend Edge could be the right choice for the new game.

Edge made his shocking WWE return in 2020 after being told 9 years previous that he could never wrestle again. Doctors went as far as to say it could be fatal for him if he continued to wrestle. Edge was forced to retire in 2011, but thanks to his determination, he found his way back to the ring. Edge's return was once considered to be an impossibility due to the extent of his injuries, and not only has the wrestling legend come back, many fans consider him to be putting on great work since his return. For WWE 2k22, Edge could be the right choice to feature on the cover.

Beyond his unlikely comeback at the 2020 edition of the Royal Rumble, Edge was unfortunately injured again in a match with Randy Orton. The superstar tore his triceps, which took him out of the action again for 7 months. Edge returned once again at the 2021 Royal Rumble and won the men's Royal Rumble match, earning his shot at a world championship at WrestleMania. Comeback stories like this in WWE are feelgood moments for the fans and wrestlers involved. Featuring Edge as the cover star of WWE 2K22 would reward the hard work he pulled off to return on two occasions and solidify his reestablished reputation as a WWE superstar.

WWE has several potential cover stars for 2K22, but Edge's cross-generational appeal and recognition give him a strong case to be featured. Edge debuted in the much-vaunted Attitude Era, teaming with his pal Christian before moving on to singles stardom as the 2000s went on. The multi-time world champion has been an essential part of several WWE eras and can be recognized by a variety of fans, both old and new. Edge is one of the last remaining stars of a bygone era, and his being featured on the new game cover could ignite nostalgia in some fans while appealing to modern fans.

Featuring Edge as the cover star on a WWE game would have arguably been more timely if it took place last year, hot on the heels of his return to active competition. Since WWE 2k21 was canceled, this couldn't happen, but coming off of his great performance at WrestleMania, now could be the time to feature Edge as the cover star.

Despite Edge's injuries, the matches he has performed in since his return have been widely praised. Edge has competed in several stellar bouts with the likes of Randy Orton and Jey Uso, won the 2021 Royal Rumble match, and most recently competed against Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37. As a wrestler who is back just over a year from a 9-year retirement, it's hard to say if any critics could have expected him to be so good in the ring. Based on his performances alone since January 2020, Edge is a top pick to be the new cover star.

It's important to note as well that Edge is in his late-40s. In terms of wrestling, he's an elder statesman, but he somehow has managed to get himself into magnificent shape, and he has proven he can participate in long matches. Many of his peers from the Attitude Era have retired or moved on, such as Kane who was recently into the WWE Hall of Fame, so it's a testament to Edge's grit and determination that he could come back at all, let alone be in such great physical condition.

WWE has many viable cover stars for WWE 2K22 but perhaps not many as appropriate as Edge. The Hall of Famer defied the odds to return to WWE, put on some excellent matches, and seems determined to end his career on his own terms. Regardless of his inspiring comeback story, his performances speak volumes about his resolve. Where many older wrestlers return for one or two matches, Edge has come back to enter a new phase of his career. For some fans, it's easy to see WWE rewarding his unlikely return and match quality with an appearance on the new game cover.

WWE 2K22 is currently in development.
