Dane Axes are a weapon type in Assassin's Creed Valhalla that offers great damage and reach. Here's how to use them effectively!

Arguably the melee weapon type in Assassin's Creed Valhalla that packs the most punch per individual hit, Dane Axes are two-handed armaments that can help Eivor cleave through man and bestial foes alike. Despite the relatively slow attack speed, these huge hatchets can be great battlefield allies thanks to dealing great damage against health and moderate damage to stamina.

With short and sweet combos, players can hack away at enemies in controlled bursts for the most effective way to unleash havoc upon foes while not overextending themselves. There are a manner of ways one can do so, especially if they have acquired the Heavy Dual Wield skill from the Way of the Bear perk tree, which unlocks new moves for all two-handed weapons.

What a Dane Axe lacks in attack speed it makes up for in reach, for not only do attacks extend a generous amount in front of the player, but also covers one's flanks with great sweeping motions. These large weapons are perfect for those who wish to throw themselves into a fray, as an ideal use for Dane Axes is to purposely get surrounded and then let loose a hurricane of heavy strikes.

The light attack combo consists of 5 wide slashes that range from horizontal swings to overhead slams, all of which deal decent health and stamina damage.

Heavy attacks are a bit simpler, with a max 3-hit combo that starts off with a downward vertical slash that is followed by two hefty horizontal swings. This move can deal a lot of damage to both health and stamina (favoring the former), especially of all 3 hits connect.

With a secondary weapon equipped, the attacks of many moves in the light and heavy combos get additional hits in a variety of manners. One-handed weapons will not be very useful in most situations as the difference between them and the main hand Dane Axe will be great enough to mean that the shorter armament will often not connect unless the player is right in their enemy's face, which completely undermines the great reach of the Dane Axe.

Therefore, in terms of weapon pairings, gamers should use another Dane Axe, a Great Sword, or a Spear in the secondary hand. When dual-wielding 2 heavy weapons, a Dane Axe's light combo gains an additional hit and different animations. This new one leads with a horizontal double slash that swings both weapons simultaneously for 2 hits, 2 more spaced-out cleaves, and then another double slash to finish with 2 last hits for 6 total.

The heavy attacks will now use the secondary weapon as well, though the number of individual strikes remains capped at 3. Though, with 2 heavy weapons being swung at once, each blow essentially counts for twice the impact. The animation also stays relatively similar, though the secondary hand weapon's pattern mirrors the main hand Dane Axe's.

While equipped in the secondary hand, players can use a continuous attack by holding down the same button one would tap to parry to unleash consecutive sweeping strikes that will progressively drain stamina. It is advised to use this tornado-like maneuver with another two-handed weapon in the main hand, like a Great Sword or a Spear, as they will join in with similar or greater reach to turn Eivor into a maelstrom of misfortune for unwary foes.

The stamina consumption is pretty quick, so use this tactic sparingly, however, it is one of the best attacks for getting many kills at once. Ending the attack by releasing the button will also leave one vulnerable for a moment, so be sure to finish one's blender-like antics with enough stamina to dodge if needed.

To turn Eivor into a walking battlefield guillotine, all one needs to do is equip 2 Dane Axes at once and let loose all of this weapon type's potential in whatever ratio the player desires. Not only does this tactic include all of the aforementioned attacks and combos, but it also unleashes them faster thanks to the same-type weapon speed bonus.

This bonus to agility comes with a slight debuff to damage, though is worth the trade, for Dane Axes do enough base damage for this small hindrance to be negligible. There is no difference in the animations between dual-wielding Dane Axes and wielding one with another heavy weapon (besides the speed). This aspect does not impact useability much but makes learning how to best use this tactic in battle a bit quicker. After some practice swings, the player will be ready fell any foe as if they were a harmless tree.
