The latest event in Apex Legends has introduced its first of several Limited-Time Modes, with this one allowing players to respawn once for free.

The new War Games event has just arrived in Apex Legends and has brought in the first of five special LTMs that add some radical changes to the usual rules. Second Chance sees all players starting a match with a Respawn Token that allows them to respawn and redeploy into the arena without the assistance of their squadmates.

War Games will be introducing four more LTMs over the course of the next two weeks, bringing in some temporary shake-ups to Apex Legends. All the LTMs are takeover events, meaning they will replace regular Trios and Duos play, and Second Chance will be replaced by Ultra Zones this Thursday, April 15.

Second Chance changes the Apex Legends rules by giving all players one chance to respawn by using a Respawn Token and the mode is available on both Kings Canyon and Olympus. When a player starts a Second Chance match, they will be able to see a green triangular icon with a winged heart inside next to their name in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This is a player’s Respawn Token and it will disappear when a player uses it.

If a player gets knocked down, a button prompt will appear telling players that they can choose to use their Token right away, rather than waiting to be revived by a squadmate normally.

If a player chooses to use their Token or is killed outright for the first time, a timer will start counting down and their camera will start to rise. Once the timer reaches zero, players will respawn in the air above where they died, allowing them to either land nearby to fight their killers, or escape elsewhere. Players that respawn using a Token will also keep all their gear and weapons so that they can easily fight back.

However, when a player kills another player that uses their Respawn Token, their Death Box will be green and cannot be looted like a normal Death Box. Instead, the box will drop some of the respawning player’s non-weapon items, such as ammo, healing items, and attachments. This does not affect the respawning player’s inventory as they still retain all their gear.

If a player dies without a Respawn Token, they can be respawned as normal by having a squadmate retrieve their Banner Card and using a Respawn Beacon. Players that die without Tokens will also drop normal Death Boxes with their entire inventory inside that can be looted normally by other players.

Because of all opportunities for extra kills and damage during this mode, Apex Legends developers Respawn have clarified that the Wrath and Wake Legend badges cannot be obtained in this mode. With War Games marking the beginning of the end for Season 8, Apex Legends developers have already been sharing some big changes coming to Season 9, such as a big rework for Lifeline.

Apex Legends is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
