The Forgotten City releases a new trailer announcing the game's release window. While The Forgotten City got its start as a popular Skyrim mod, it is now receiving a full standalone release for PC and consoles.
Fans that have taken advantage of Skyrim's incredible library of mods may recognize The Forgotten City. As a mod, it received a release for both the standard version of Skyrim, as well as a remastered release for Skyrim Special Edition. The mod boasted a six-to-eight hour campaign with a new location and was extremely popular, even becoming the first mod in history to receive a Writer's Guild award for its script.

The new trailer for The Forgotten City does not give away too many details, but it does give a hint at the title's story as well as announces its summer 2021 release window. As fans of the mod will know, The Forgotten City is a murder mystery that sees players progressing through a non-linear story filled with time travel and social interaction. The original mod took place in an underground city within the world of Skyrim, while the full release moves that underground city beneath ancient Rome. The full release also sees the player take control of a time traveler transported 2,000 years in the past, as it can no longer use the player's Skyrim character.
The Forgotten City's mystery is centered around the unique city setting that is carried over from the original Skyrim mod. There are only 26 inhabitants of the city whom the developers describe as lost souls, and they all die once anyone in the city breaks an unknown golden rule. To solve the mystery players will have to investigate clues, interrogate inhabitants, make difficult moral decisions, and "exploit the time loop" in clever ways. With multiple endings and a character creator that allows players to roleplay different backgrounds, The Forgotten City also encourages multiple playthroughs.
While The Forgotten City has not revealed gameplay footage as of yet, the game's history as the Skyrim mod is a promising legacy for it to live up to. Mods being released as full games is not completely unheard of, with some huge titles like Team Fortress sharing a similar history, and it is great to see dedicated fans being able to turn their hobbies into a professional career. Hopefully, The Forgotten City lives up to the original mod and achieves similar success.
The Forgotten City releases summer 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
