The end of April marks a very exciting time for fans of the Pokemon franchise. In addition to the numerous ongoing Pokemon GO events that have been a part of the Season of Legends, Nintendo Switch owners are also going to have a chance to experience a different kind of adventure with the launch of New Pokemon Snap.
As with previous Nintendo Switch Pokemon games, Pokemon GO is planning to help celebrate the launch with a tie-in event of its own. The mobile AR game will be hosting a special Pokemon Snap event for a few days, beginning April 29, that will feature some special Pokemon from the Lental region and put a focus on its own snapshot feature.

One of the most exciting features about the Pokemon Snap event in the mobile game is likely going to be the chance for a Shiny Smeargle encounter. Smeargle may not be incredibly relevant to the Pokemon GO meta game, but it is still a very popular and novel Pokemon. It sounds like the shiny encounter possibility will only be available during the event (until it returns in a future event), so fans who are interested in adding to their shiny dex progress should definitely plan to take advantage of the event's features.
"In New Pokémon Snap, you’ll travel to islands unknown to photograph a variety of Pokémon and create your very own Pokémon Photodex. To celebrate the game’s release, you can enjoy an event in Pokémon GO inspired by this fun method of researching Pokémon ecology through photography!"
From Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, May 2, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. local time
Pokémon inspired by the deserts, jungles, and underwater landscapes of the Lental region—such as Lotad, Cacnea, and Ducklett—will be appearing more often in the wild!
Smeargle will be appearing in snapshots more often than usual! If you’re lucky, you might even encounter a Shiny Smeargle!
Please note that Smeargle will only appear in snapshots a limited number of times, and while Shiny Smeargle will no longer appear after the event concludes, you may encounter one during future events.
Pokémon inspired by the Lental region—like Vaporeon, Meganium, and Trapinch—will be appearing more often in raids!
Look forward to event-exclusive Field Research and Timed Research that’s focused on taking snapshots!
A camera avatar item and a camera-themed Gift sticker will be available in the shop during the event! The new Gift sticker will also be available from PokéStops.
