Far Cry 6 Needs a Hero as Interesting as its Villain for a Change

Far Cry 6 is speculated to be a radical departure from the series formula, which calls for a richly realized and equally complex hero.

The Far Cry games have been all about causing chaos in some of the most exotic locations around the world for some time now, and fans of the series are now busy speculating about what they might get to see next. Far Cry 6 is the next game in the series, one that has the potential to dictate the tone of a new decade of FC games.

The Yara-based Far Cry 6 has a great deal of fan hype surrounding it, and fans are zealously hoping for a big overhaul to the now familiar to some extent, stagnant Far Cry formula. This might mean a bunch of different things, but it seems that Far Cry 6 should make some big changes regarding its protagonist.

The Far Cry games have been known for their villains for the longest time, be it the eerie encounters with Far Cry 3's Vaas or the seemingly larger-than-life cult leader Joseph Seed. The protagonists, on the other hand, have mostly remained stereotypical survivors, turning into remorseless killers the second their lives are put in danger.

This has worked great in the past and has allowed players to prioritize creating their own fun within the expansive settings featured in the game without restricting them to the morality and ethics of a well-defined character. However, the narrative shift that is supposed to come with Far Cry 6 begs for a reimagining of what a Far Cry protagonist can be.

As much as a silent protagonist allowed players to "project themselves" into the twisted worlds of the franchise, there's a lot of room for improvement. The overly serious tone of the narrative and the involved antagonists required Far Cry 5 to have a rich and equally opposing protagonist, and the game failed to deliver on such a premise to some extent. Far Cry 6 seems focused on doubling down on such a narrative theme, as a seemingly all-mighty tyrant Anton Castillo rules over the now-breaking city of Yara. These desperate times call for desperate measures, and this is when players would assume the role of Dani Rojas and begin a quest to liberate their native land from the clutches of the tyrant.

Unlike Far Cry 5 or previous Far Cry games in general, the quest isn't a player's duty or a means to survival but rather an intrinsically motivating task to breathe a new life into this devastated land. The darker tone set by the game's trailers calls for a richly realized, multi-faceted, and motivated protagonist to deliver on the premise of having a say in what goes about the revolution. This might be a big change for the series, but so is a requirement for the newfound narrative setup.

A densely-packed Yara might house a bunch of great side content that could help Dani inch closer to victory, and engaging with such content shouldn't probably rob the narrative of any sense of urgency. Hopefully, Far Cry 6 shakes up the now seemingly stagnant series formula, and Dani Rojas joins the ranks as some of the best Far Cry characters.

Far Cry 6 is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
