Destiny 2 Player Discovers Interesting Fact About Damage and Recommended Power

A Destiny 2 player releases the result of a test that suggests there is no difference in damage output when exceeding the recommended level.

Destiny 2 player has recently conducted an experiment to test the effectiveness of power levels when extending above the recommended level of any particular activity. The results run in line with Destiny players claiming to feel weaker in some of the more recent expansions, though it does also seem to confirm some suspicions others have had about the series for a while.

It should be noted that these results are from the experimentation of a single player, so it is entirely possible that there could be minor errors in the findings that could be corroborated or disproven by further review from more players. Still, the conclusion might not be entirely surprising to longtime Destiny 2 players, though it does contradict a long-held belief about the damage drop-off at higher levels.

According to the original Reddit post where user Jaded-Ad2838 explained the experiment and compiled the data, it would appear that increasing power level beyond the recommended level doesn't actually increase damage output. These results also appear to confirm that the power of both the weapon and the overall gear has no additional effect on damage as long as the collective power level is at or above the recommended level for the activity. So, while equipping some of Destiny 2's strongest weapons can give their own advantages on a case by case basis, as long as they're at the recommended power level, they'll always have the same utility in each activity.

The testing itself was conducted in the Last Wish raid, using four identical guns with the same perks and no additional mod, only differentiating with the power level of each one. Jaded-Ad2838 then tested each weapon, all with the same armor set, against the first unstoppable ogre that appears in the raid on Legend difficulty. As expected with the first three weapons, the differing power levels leading up to the recommended had massively different amounts of damage output, but the two that tipped just over read the exact same dps with the same test.

Some commenters also shared that it's a commonly held belief among players that the damage output changes within a twenty point range of the recommended level of any given activity. While a secondary test by Jaded-Ad2838 continues to suggest otherwise, it isn't uncommon for players to make assumptions based on their own personal experiences while playing the game normally. Players can feel free to replicate this test for themselves, but these results do add some perspective to the grind for Destiny 2's power cap in relation to the recommended power of the most challenging activities.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
