A fan of Overwatch shows off the first stage of progress for what they are calling a D.Va dogfight mode focusing on D.Va's mech.

With the sequel still nowhere certain on the horizon, Overwatch remains popular. Possessing fantastic emotes and characters, the meta of the game has since slowed from its earlier days.

For many, Overwatch has changed a great deal from the game that originally captured their love. At this point, some players are stepping outside the rules of the game, and many have turned to its creative mode. One such player is working to make D.Va more dynamic than ever with a mode centered exclusively on her and her mech with one added feature: true flight.

The mode is in its early stages but seems like it will focus on piloting D.Va's mech as an aircraft. The thrusters that normally allow temporary increased mobility can instead carry D.Va into the sky, but the mech will come crashing down if it takes too much damage. The mode could see great success, since despite the fact that players have long called for buffs to the character, data suggests D.Va is far and away Overwatch's most popular character. It's not hard to see why either, as the character combines a compelling backstory and identifiable drive with the option to pilot a mech.

The mod is inspired by a similar mod centered on Bastion which enables players to fly by continuously shooting the direction they wished to accelerate towards. With D.Va, it looks like the flying will be significantly smoother. This is because the boosters on D.Va's mech already allow for somewhat limited air mobility, so extending their capabilities seems natural. Considering how unhappy many Overwatch players are with the game's latest experimental mode update, it's possible they may turn to alternate game modes. If the mod is finished soon enough, it may see a surge in popularity.

The announcement was made via a Reddit post, and the responses are mostly positive, showing a desire for the mod. Hopefully it can be completed soon since it's always possible that Overwatch 2 will crest the horizon someday soon. Since Overwatch 2's characters are likely in for a reckoning, D.Va may be forever changed when it launches.

Still, it's an impressive idea for a mod, and one that will hopefully see success. Despite ups and downs in the game, the community remains dedicated to Overwatch, especially to its colorful characters. Fan creations like a stained-glass Brigitte skin continue to demonstrate the creativity that Overwatch's universe inspires.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
