The new preview update rolling out for Xbox Insider members adds a few new features, including a bit of extra functionality for Quick Resume.

Fans of the often-praised Quick Resume feature on the Xbox Series X have a lot to be happy about this week. Not only will Xbox owners soon be able to boost their download speeds by easily suspending games with the latest official system update, but members of the Xbox Insider program have another update preview to dig into, rolling out today.

The Xbox Insider program is essentially a kind of Early Access framework for Xbox system updates. Members of the community can sign up for the program and reap the benefits of new features and fixes before they're released to the general public. Naturally, this also comes with a few caveats in case folks run into bugs, and there's an expectation that users will offer constructive feedback on the preview update builds they get, something that most of them are happy to provide. Often, though, the new features are fine to use straight out of the proverbial box, like the Suspend feature that was offered to Insiders last month.

This month's update for the program's Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead users – the top tiers in the Xbox Insider hierarchy – includes a host of small but handy tweaks. Perhaps most notable is the introduction of a new way of grouping games on the dashboard, allowing users to see all the games with an active Quick Resume save state at once. Players can also now see quickly and easily if the currently-running game supports Quick Resume, something that will come in handy as more Xbox games start getting that functionality.

The OS preview also showcases the addition of an "audio passthrough" option for the media apps. This setting would allow users to send audio from apps like Netflix straight to their audio setup, circumventing any compression or other changes caused by the Xbox's own audio system and potentially granting a significant boost in audio quality for those with a high-tech speaker system at home.

Other small fixes have also been implemented, and the team also included a laundry list of known issues it's working on for future updates, including missing icons, dodgy controller inputs, and the occasional crash or freeze when using certain apps. The Quick Resume and audio tweaks are still the real selling point of this update, although lower-tier Insiders and the general public will have to wait a little longer to check them out.

It certainly makes a lot of sense that Microsoft would be putting in the effort to streamline a lot of these processes on the Xbox Series consoles. With the sheer wealth of options available on its wildly successful Xbox Game Pass service, being able to chop and change between several different games is something that many players will doubtless appreciate as they seek out their favorite titles from the extensive library.
