Gamers trying Apex Legends for the first time should avoid these mistakes that can lose them the match.

Newcomers of Apex Legends might find it tricky to adjust to their first few matches in the Respawn Entertainment title. After all, this FPS game combines hero shooters with the battle royale format - humongous maps, unique abilities, a lot of guns, and a ton of shooting. As such, beginners might find themselves studying their gear one minute and then meeting the business end of a shotgun the next.

Things can get confusing real fast, and a small error can cost the entire team the match. However, knowing and avoiding some common errors can steer fresh players quickly into their first few victories. Just what beginner mistakes should all Apex Legends newcomers pay attention to?

10 Don't Switch Drop Sites At The Last Second

When a Jumpmaster or Solo Launcher sees a squad trail heading to their drop site, they have two options - land in a hot zone and hope they eliminate the enemy first, or do a last-minute swerve to an area and hope to find enough gear there. Either way, there's a high risk of dying, and it's likely a lose-lose, right?

Not necessarily - remember, players can look left, right, and down to check for drop sites. However, it's perfect possible to look backwards, too. Meaning, players can see whenever squads drop and their general direction. Squads with good map awareness can use their time looking at other squad trails to assess if they want to drop close to the enemy or as far away as possible.

9 Don't Forget About Noise

In Apex Legends, noise is everyone's best friend. Remember, the only safe noise in an area is anything the player's team makes. A fourth footstep, an interaction from afar, or even hearing a Legend outside the squad is always a nearby enemy. Players who neglect this always end up getting jumped on by an enemy, and it almost always leads to deaths.

To avoid such a rookie mistake, players need to stay alert and ears open to all the noise around them. Thanks to the game's sounds, players almost always have a way of determining the general direction of any sound. Remember, if players can hear a sound that's not from their squad, it's only a matter of time before a combat encounter - so stay sharp!

8 Don't Ignore The Little Details

Granted, each map in Apex Legends is huge - players die easily because they can't see where the shot is coming from, they can't catch the direction of the sniper, or they can't turn quickly enough to face the enemy. Thing is, players can avoid such deaths by spotting tiny details around them - and this attention to detail is something they can train.

Remember, only two things should move in any part of the map - the squad, and announced packages. Small ants in wide areas are enemies, flashes at a distance are gunfire, and multiple dots falling off the sky are ordinances from Tacticals or Ultimates. Likewise, players shouldn't neglect little indicators in their hub. For instance, the red arrowhead that appears when shot is always pointing away from the source of the shot.

7 Don't Forget About The Numbers Three And Six

Albeit a bit philosophical, Apex Legends players shouldn't forget about two numbers: three, and six.

Firstly, every squad comes in threes. Granted, sometimes players end up in a duo or even solo - but squads almost always come in threes. In combat, unless someone from the player's team announces they've eliminated the enemy squad, then someone else is still out there. Forgetting about missing enemy members can lead to a fatal surprise attack.

Second, all players should mind their six o'clock. Whenever players expose a part of their body to open space, they should always look in those directions every so often. Granted, this slows their movement a bit - but a well-timed turn can help them catch a stalking enemy or even let them know if they're trailing the same path as the enemy squad from afar.

6 Don't Contemplate On A Weapon Longer Than 5 Seconds

While players eventually have "favorite" guns, they don't always find their favorite gear right away. Should they settle for their single-shot 30-30 Rep-Rep (Heavy Rounds) and hope to find a Flatline (Heavy Rounds) - but also skip the R-301 Carbine (Light Rounds) that's in this supply pod? It's these decisions that make players contemplate longer on their weapon choices - and enemies love distracted players.

To avoid an attack while choosing weapons, players should instead build their ideal arsenal with what they can find. Players shouldn't take more than five seconds to grab a weapon. As a quick tip, mid-range weapons (Assault Rifles, LMGs) get paired best with short-ranged secondaries (Shotguns, SMGs). Meanwhile, full-auto is recommended for spray firing, while single-shot works for more precise players.

5 Don't Stay Anywhere Longer Than 30 Seconds

Unless there's a guarantee that enemies are nearby, there's no reason to stay and camp in an area for longer than a half-minute. Remember, squads always want to get something better than what they have - and the more area they cover within the ring's safe zone, the higher the chances of better loot.

Thing is, when players take too much time to loot an area, the higher the chances that an enemy team will encounter them. Sadly, it's focusing too much on the looting aspect that can motivate enemies to take advantage of an unsuspecting team and ambush them. As a rule of thumb, players should always be on the move to avoid combat or to get away from combat if need be.

4 Don't Abstain From Third Partying

Sometimes, squads die in encounters not just because of their direct enemies - but because of third parties who steal the show. With this in mind, players should remember two things about combat: they can always interrupt an ongoing battle, and another squad can interrupt theirs.

Defensively, this means players should always stay on the lookout if another squad is waiting for an opportunity to strike them. Players who win a fight should secure the area for any nearby squads before looting.

Offensively, players can check if the fighting squads are sticking to a single area. They can interrupt their battle with grenades, or even wide-area Ultimates (Bangalore's Rolling Thunder, Gibraltar's Defensive Bombardment, and Fuse's Motherlode).

3 Don't Ignore The Presence Of Doors

Leaving doors open or close won't have any direct effect to a character's stats, so why should people even care about them? Thing is, bullets can go through an open doorway, and a downed enemy can block a door for a quick revive. Funnily enough, door control can be just as important as having enough ammo in combat.

For instance, an open door indicates someone's been there. Meaning, closing a door can lure enemies into a false sense of security. Plus, hearing the sound of a door being opened can serve as a quick warning that an enemy is nearby. When used offensively, an open door is a free shot into any enemy inside the room.

When expecting an enemy encounter, a player can close a door quickly to interrupt an enemy's entrance. They can do this while downed, too! As a plus, it still takes an enemy a few seconds to punch, shoot, and explode a door open.

2 Don't Underestimate Fear

Fear can force the player's squad to panic, choke, and lead themselves into an early death. This is how the enemy catches them "by surprise," force the player into wasting bullets, or give away the squad's position.

Thankfully, players can use the same fear in a number of ways. For instance, if random noise can give away a stalking enemy, players can willingly become bait, and force focus on them as their teammates flank the distracted enemy.

Meanwhile, sending enemies on high alert can also force them to choke. Leaving defensive Tacticals (e.g., Rampart's Amped Cover, Wattson's Perimeter Security, Caustic's Nox Gas Trap), proccing offensive Ultimates (e.g., Bangalore's Rolling Thunder, Gibraltar's Defensive Bombardment), or even harassing via detection (e.g., Bloodhound's Eye of the Allfather or Crypto's Surveillance Drone) can "scare" the enemy into repositioning and lead them right to the player's ambush.

1 Don't Forget About Baiting Rewards

Participants of the Apex Games know that the best gear and the best weapons lie in Rare Loot Zones, Care Packages, and even Supply Ships. This also explains why enemies also coincidentally appear in those places, right? Not necessarily - enemies just know that careless players can't resist the temptation of scoring a Legendary off these areas.

Remember, the prospect of reward can make squads neglect the fact that they may be entering a high-risk zone. If possible, players can capitalize on these "reward hotspots" to take out enemies who try to approach them. This works with items, too! Players can drop an empty high-level armor, lure an enemy into taking it out of panic, and finish the squad.
