Like most open-world games, Breath of the Wild is no stranger to the modding community, though they may be slightly less accessible due to the limitations of the Switch in comparison to the freedom of PC gaming. But while most mods change lighting, overhaul the music, or allow players to play as Mipha, Ruto, and even Linkle, Second Wind is bigger than either of Breath of the Wild's official DLCs.
Second Wind is a two-part mod created by over 50 people. The first half, Labors of the Hero, adds 15 side quests, 8 new areas, 28 animals, 13 bosses, 20 NPCs, 35 armor pieces, and 38 new food recipes along with some various swords, spears, and other weapons. Additionally, the Second Wind mod also acts as an unofficial patch in some ways, fixing bugs such as chests that are unreachable in the vanilla version of Breath of the Wild.

Labors of the Hero is currently available for the Switch, though it's still in beta, while the second half of Second Wind known as The Ancient Island is still in development with no set release date. The community's Discord server has over 12,000 members, with nearly half of them acting as beta testers for the massive mod.
As for the story, Second Wind occurs after the events of The Champions' Ballad quest. Link is telepathy contacted by Zelda, who tells him to visit the Forgotten Temple. There, the hero speaks to a monk, who instructs him to collect five special keys to gain access to the land above the clouds. After completing all main quests in Labors of the Hero, Link is rewarded with an unbreakable Hylian Shield. In his adventures, Link will encounter new characters, such as a girl living under a strict fathers' roof, though she hopes to one day follow in Link's footsteps, and the grandson of a Hylian noble who hopes to make up for his ancestor's sins.
In addition to the many story quests inspired by Breath of the Wild's roots, Second Wind overhauls the look of the shrines in the vanilla game, while also adding several new ones. Some of them now look more like the dungeons in classic Zelda games. And speaking of the classics, the mod adds many masks to the game that were originally seen in Majora's Mask, purchasable via the Happy Mask Salesman.
Another major addition thanks to the Second Wind mod is some elements from Survival of the Wild, a survival Breath of the Wild mod. From it, Second Wind implemented some features such as making trees harder to chop down with non-ax weapons, and ore veins now require the proper tools or will otherwise wear down weapons.
Labors of the Hero can be downloaded via the Second Wind Discord server.
Breath of the Wild is out now for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
