The Medal Case is a new item Destiny 2 gives players during the Guardian Games, but there's a bit of confusion as to what it is and is for.

As the Season of the Chosen nears its end in Destiny 2, Bungie is adding a bit of drama to the experience. The Guardian Games event has returned following its debut last year, bringing a friendly competition to each of the three classes. Players compete for medals in most of the various activities in Destiny 2, eventually adding them to a podium in the Tower to see which class can take home the gold. While Titans took home the trophy last year, this year's event is currently up for grabs.

While there was a bit of controversy last year over class medal balancing to account for the large population of Hunter players, this year's event brought with it a few changes which aim to streamline the event. The scoring system has been tweaked so that each class gets the same point value, though the class that finished in third place after one week will get a permanent 10% point value boost. Players can also pick up a Contender Card for medals and other rewards, as well as take part in a special Guardian Games Strike Playlist that features unique modifiers.

This year's event also features a new item called the Medal Case, though it's purpose and where Bungie has placed it within the game's UI is causing more than a little confusion for many players. Here's everything players need to know about the Medal Case during this year's Guardian Games in Destiny 2.

After logging in to Destiny 2 for the first time after the Guardian Games kicked off, players will be directed to Commander Zavala to kick off the introduction quest. After a bit of text, they're sent to Eva Levante who not only provides bounties and rewards, but the mechanic known as the Medal Case. Essentially, this item is handed to players as a way to store medals and laurels earned during the event, otherwise player inventories and likely the postmaster would be filling up very quickly. It is not a special quest that leads to any specific reward.

The other big reason why this item is given to players is to keep them informed as to how many medals they've earned and laurels collected. Each section has a maximum cap that, once reached, will prevent players from earning any more until the items brought to the Tower and deposited at the podium or turned into Eva Levante. This is another step to prevent players from going idle and farming activities, a major problem that Bungie ran into at one point with the Black Armory forges.

Once acquired, the medal case can be found under the Quests tab from the director. What can be a bit confusing about this is that it's not actually a quest at all, so there's really nothing for players to do with it. It's similar to other seasonal items that are placed here such as the Cryptolith Lure or the Hammer of Proving from earlier this season, which was another item that left a more than a few players confused as to what to do with it.

The other reason for the Medal Case confusion is due to some text on the item that indicates the Medal Case is a quest and is currently on step 1 of 1, which not only indicates quest steps, but teases that there could be an end point. However, this is likely an oversight by Bungie as the item in question is only there to give players an idea of how much stuff they've collected and when they may want to think about turning it in. There's no prize for maximizing each item on the checklist.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light and the new Season of the Chosen are available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
