An in-development Valheim mod is aiming to turn the popular Viking-themed survival game into an MMO with massive servers and minigames.

Valheim has managed to maintain its incredible popularity after a meteoric rise to the top of the Steam charts since it launched earlier this year. The Viking-themed survival game has grown a large community of modders, and they have made a wide variety of mods that completely transform Valheim.

Valheim puts players in control of the spirits of fallen Viking warriors who are sent to the purgatory to hunt down various mythological monsters that live in the realm. To do so, players have to survive Valheim by building houses, farming, and crafting new equipment as they level up and prepare to hunt down the boss monsters.

Now, a new mod is aiming to turn the best-selling survival RPG Valheim into a massive full-fledged MMO. The mod is titled VaLNGOS, standing for Valheim Large Network Game Object Server Suite, first noted by PCGamesN, which got in contact with one of the developers over email. The developers say that the mod is being crafted by a senior game designer, two engineers working for FAANG companies, and a few developers from the massive World of Warcraft server project MaNGOS that was the baseline for the popular legacy servers Nostalrius and Elysium.

The mod aims to take all of the server processing from players' computers and move it to a single server location. The process is not easy, and requires the use of programming languages usually used for developing operating systems, but once it is complete the developer working on the project claims that they will be able to hit servers with thousands of players playing at once.

The developers also state that the end goal of the mod is to create an experience similar to popular Minecraft minigame server Hypixel, as well as "new types of massive RPG experiences." Little other information is known at this time, as the mod is still very early in the development process, but it sounds as though it will be much larger than the average Valheim mod.

The mod is undeniably ambitious. Valheim is no stranger to incredible mods that change how players play the game, but such a massive undertaking as the one these developers are attempting will completely alter the core experience of Valheim. It will be fascinating to see what final form the mod takes in the end, and if it is successful it will undoubtedly find a large fanbase amongst Valheim players that are looking for a larger Viking experience.

Valheim is available now in early access on PC.
