Publisher MyTona and developer Fntastic have revealed The Day Before, an open-world survival MMO that is set for launch on PC via Steam during Q2, 2021.

The Day Before, whose gameplay footage seems reminiscent of triple-A behemoths like The Division and The Last of Us, is a massively multiplayer online survival game set in the dystopia of a post-pandemic America (a little close to home right now, eh?)

“The Day Before is an open-world massively multiplayer online survival set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars,” reads a description of the game. “You wake up alone in a world you no longer remember, setting out to find answers and the resources to survive.”

Check out the reveal trailer below.

Press materials for the game tell us that we’re encouraged to “crush the infected and other players with realistic weapons, becoming a legend of the new world” whilst “[exploring] beautiful yet dangerous places with stunningly detailed vehicles”. It looks like elements of The Division’s gunplay, realized with DayZ’s various survival mechanics (temperature gauge, thirst meter, and so on) – a good match, by all accounts.

Seeing this incredibly impressive and cinematic trailer emerge from the studio is quite a surprise. Developer Fntastic has previously worked on mobile adventure game Radiant One, and created top-down survival game The Wild Eight, but neither have been on this scale.

Publisher MyTona, on the other hand, is mostly known for free-to-play mobile games, though it does claim to be “one of the largest game development companies in Russia and the CIS”, and it’s clear there’s a decent budget behind the game.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen a developer make the leap from smaller titles to triple-A quality games, though – remember Hello Games’ output before No Man’s Sky? Let’s hope Fntastic fares better during the launch phase than Hello Games ever did, though…
