CD Projekt Red announces that The Witcher location-based AR spin-off, The Witcher: Monster Slayer is going to release sometime this Summer.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer was a bit of a surprise for many fans when it was announced last year. Now, CD Projekt Red has announced that The Witcher fans can expect to get their hands on The Witcher: Monster Slayer when it launches this summer.

Thanks to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Netflix's The Witcher series, the property has become a powerhouse over the past handful of years. While the mobile game's announcement was not what fans were expecting, it makes a lot of sense that CD Projekt Red would want the blockbuster series to break into the mobile market.

While The Witcher has been handled with care by CD Projekt Red itself thus far, The Witcher: Monster Slayer is being developed by the smaller independent studio Spokko. The game soft launched in a few countries a couple of months ago, but CD Projekt Red announced in a recent financial results meeting that it expects the location-based AR app to fully launch this Summer. The Witcher: Monster Slayer sees players walking around the real world to complete quests, investigate clues and tracks, and, of course, fight some of The Witcher's most iconic monsters with a mixture of swords and magic.

Not much new information has been revealed about the app apart from the gameplay reveal that was released in September of last year. While many compare the location-based AR game to the popular Pokemon GO, there is also quite a bit that sets it apart. Not only does The Wither: Monster Slayer offer narrative quests that are set in the same world and expansive lore that Witcher fans love, but they also react to the time of day and weather the player is in when they talk to NPCs. The app even allows players to collect trophies from the monsters they have killed like everyone's favorite Witcher, Geralt.

The release date being so soon is a nice surprise, and the app looks as though it will be a fun experience for any fans of The Witcher. However, the app does come after CD Projekt Red lost some favor with fans due to the buggy state of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch that led to the company changing its strategy for releases that may have led to The Witcher: Monster Slayer's release announcement coming so close to the actual announcement. However, CD Projekt Red also had a record year for the company last year, so it is just doing just fine. Hopefully The Witcher: Monster Slayer is the beginning of the company's redemption story in fan's eyes, and not another misstep.

The Witcher Monster Slayer launches this Summer for Android and iOS.
