HBO continues to expand its Game of Thrones franchise with an animated series.

As HBO keeps looking to expand the Game of Thrones franchise, they may be ready to take it in an unexpected new direction. The latest proposed spin-off from the hit fantasy series that HBO is considering is an animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter says their sources have confirmed early talks at HBO about the animated series that will reportedly be an adult-oriented drama and have a similar tone to the live-action series. HBO is said to be meeting with various writers to discuss the project, but no deals have been made at this time.

News of this latest spin-off comes just days after it was announced HBO was in the early stages of developing a series based on Martin's novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg which would serve as a prequel to Game of Thrones. There is also the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon starring Olivia Cooke and Matt Smith that will focus on a civil war between the Targaryen family. THR reports that HBO has been consulting Martin on all these spin-offs to determine the best way to expand on the universe he created.

The news of HBO wanting to capitalize on one of their biggest franchise comes as no surprise at a time when streaming services are always looking for big content. The recent announcement of an upcoming Harry Potter series at HBO Max proves that they are looking to compete with Disney+ and their many upcoming Star Wars and MCU shows. Given the huge potential of the Game of Thrones world, more spin-off can be expected.

While it might seem like a strange concept, the idea of an animated Game of Thrones series could be a great way to expand the franchise. With so many fantasy elements to the show, an animated platform would expand on what the show could include without constraints of budgets. However, the long list of spin-offs in development may be a bit overly confident of HBO. Though the series was one of the most popular shows of all time, its final season wasn't a hit with fans. But while some might have been turned off of the franchise, there are likely plenty who want to see more of this world.

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are currently available on HBO Max.
