According to the Vice-President of finance over at CD Projekt Red, the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will be crucial to the game's future.

Cyberpunk 2077 got off to a very rocky start and has since been attempting to improve upon itself for the last several months. With two enormous patches released, as well as an odd number of hotfixes, Cyberpunk 2077 still has a long way to go before it can function the way it was originally intended to. However, in terms of longevity, it seems the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will greatly influence public perception of the game going forward.

Despite all of the ongoing technical issues that continue to plague the game, Cyberpunk 2077 garnered some impressive sales figures and has managed to cultivate a loyal player base. Though, with no way of knowing when the next patch for the game will release, last-gen console players still have to put up with a number of immersion-breaking bugs and glitches. Of course, there could be a silver lining in the form of the next-gen ports.

During the latest earnings conference call for CD Projekt Red, Piotr Nielubowicz, the VP of finance, commented on how next-gen compatible versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 will be "crucial" in terms of their longevity. In many ways, this makes a lot of sense, given the large number of players transitioning to the newest console generations, but this could also be very big for Cyberpunk 2077 in general.

As of right now, there has been no confirmed release date for the next-gen upgrades for Cyberpunk 2077. Thus, this gives CD Projekt Red a chance to approach development much more cautiously. Not to mention that since there's no scheduled release date, the studio has no obligation to get the game done by a certain date and players will certainly be more lenient should the next-gen versions need to be delayed.

In terms of Cyberpunk 2077's roadmap for 2021, there's still a lot that needs to be done. There are still many glaring issues that need to be addressed on last-gen consoles. PS4 players are still dealing with various game crashes and performance overall leaves a lot to be desired. Although, in terms of the next-gen versions of the game, there's still reason for fans to be hopeful.

The developers have until the end of 2021 to release the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and given how poorly received the base versions of the game were, fans will be much more understanding should CD Projekt Red decide to delay Cyberpunk 2077 again. If there's one thing that members of the gaming community can learn from this experience, it's that delays aren't exactly a bad thing.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S support currently in development.
