If you're playing Mass Effect for the first time thanks to the Legendary Edition, here's a look at some beginner tips to help you out.

Mass Effect was one of the first games to combine the RPG and third-person shooter genres. What the game lacks in combat, it certainly makes up for with an amazing story and feel. The original soundtrack is one of the best ever on a console title. There is a reason why the revolutionary game is getting remastered this year.

BioWare will be making a few changes to the core gameplay mechanics to improve gunfights, which is good to hear. This guide will present a few tips and tricks for players who plan to get the Remastered Edition. It has been over thirteen years since the title was released, so gamers will need a brief refresher on how to play the game.

9 Choosing A Character

Gamers will have the option to play as either the male or female version of Shepard. They will also have the option to customize their appearance further. During the first playthrough, it might make sense to play as one of the base skins for nostalgia's sake. The customization options will be completely overhauled according to BioWare. The appearance of characters and the virtual environment will be optimized for 4k.

8 Choosing A Class

There are a handful of options while creating a new character. Gamers can make Shepard an Earthborn, Spacer, or Colonist, for example. Categorizing Shepard's backstory will alter dialogue and the main storyline in-game. Shepard will need to be assigned an ability classification as well.

One option is the soldier class, which will improve Shepard's weapon skill and damage. Players will need to choose carefully, as their class will persist throughout all three storylines. BioWare has made some balancing changes to the classes to bridge the gap between the first game and the second.

7 Good And Bad Karma

Dialogue is a huge aspect of all the Mass Effect games. Having the choice to be ruthless (Renegade) or compassionate (Paragon) added an extra layer to the gameplay that was not common when the game was released. Every option chosen will affect outcomes in the mission and throughout the series. Gamers will want to make sure they are going down the right path, because the implications will be story-altering.

6 Managing Inventory

Inventory can become an issue deeper into the game as players collect dozens of items while playing. Managing loot will ensure that no valuable items will be left behind while traversing the endless systems in the galaxy. In the original version of the game, it was clear in the interface which weapons and armor were superior. It is highly probable that BioWare focused on these aspects of the gameplay as well.

5 Using Cover

The cover system was one of the major criticisms of the original title. It was often more advantageous to manually use cover instead of using the automatic cover system. AI was unpredictable and Shepard would either be charged while in cover or shot through it. This annoying aspect of the gameplay will be better in the Legendary Edition. Although, Mass Effect was an incredible game even with flawed fighting mechanics.

4 Managing Team Members

As Shepard progresses in the story, the other two members of the team will gain skill points as well. It is important to update the fireteam skill trees to give Shepard a little help in battle. Each of the team members should be upgraded in a way that will complement Shepard's skill tree. For example, a soldier Shepard will probably need a character with a more ability-focused build.

3 Shield Awareness

The shield system in Mass Effect was confusing and irritating. It was hard to realize when shields were down due to inconsistent audio and a sub par HUD. If BioWare stick with a similar system, players need to monitor the shield if possible. It will seem like everything is fine, and Shepard will go down out of nowhere. It is common that the only cue gamers will get is Shepard yelling that his shields are down.

2 Biotic Abilities And Stuns

Enemy biotic attacks are one of the most frustrating things to deal with in Mass Effect 2. Unless the abilities are completely different in the new version of the game, they will cause headaches.

The most effective way to avoid them is to attack biotic enemies from range. Almost all of the attacks will stun or immobilize Shepard, making fighting impossible. The attacks were a bit overboard, taking characters out of the fight for several seconds every time.

1 Hit F5 All The Time

This is speculation, but we can assume that some changes will be made to the save system in the game. There were periods where checkpoints would no activate in missions after several minutes of gameplay, which forced Shepard to retrace all of his steps again. Players should over-save instead of relying on checkpoints during their first playthrough.
