Team Cherry's first game has deep lore scattered throughout, and some of it is important to understand for the events of Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Fans have yet to receive the long-awaited release date of Team Cherry's second game Hollow Knight: Silksong, but there is still a lot of ways for them to prepare for the upcoming title. Even if players have already gone through all of the five endings, including the ones of the Godmaster DLC in which the Knight gets to fight both the Hollow Knight and Absolute Radiance, there are details about the lore that are worth keeping in mind for when Hollow Knight: Sillksong is released.

Hollow Knight has gained well-deserved recognition for being a really well-crafted Metroidvania. Team Cherry definitely played a lot of attention to the game's many details to convey the narrative, and it shows through the characters, map areas, and world design in general. Even though it is not clear yet how Hollow Knight: Silksong will accommodate every ending in the first game, if at all, there is a lot of lore that is sure to play a big role in the next game.

In order to understand Hollow Knight: Silksong's lore, it is important to understand where the main character comes from. Hornet comes from a Spider Tribe. This civilization resides within Deepnest which is located in the bottom left corner of Hallownest. Deepnest is accessible through the Fungal Wastes, either through the Fungal Core or through the main gate once the Mantis Lords have been beaten, through Queen's Gardens, or using the tram.

Although Deepnest is connected in more than one way to Hallownest, it did not completely merge with the rest of the Pale King's kingdom. For one, the Mantis Lords are guarding the entrance to Deepnest as its inhabitants would often conflict with the Mantis Tribe of Fungal Wastes. The Deepnest area contrasts greatly to other locations in Hallownest, not only for its dark setting but also because of the local culture.

There are some members of the Spider Tribe known as The Weavers who seem to have come from outside of Hallownest and have now returned to their homeland. The Weavers might look similar to the inhabitants of Deepnest, but they come from a different culture in which loom is used to convey stories and even craft spells. The Weavers will play an important role in Silksong because they will be helping Hornet gain back her strength which is only natural since Hornet herself comes from Deepnest.

Hallownest was founded by the Pale King who ruled the different realms of his kingdom until his death. But what was going on in Hallownest before the Pale King arrived? Even though Hallownest was not a united kingdom from the beginning, there were some civilizations already settled in the area. Unn had created Greenpath, the Mantis Tribe had settled in Fungal Wastes, and the Spider Tribe occupied Deepnest. Once the Pale King started ruling, other bugs gained consciousness as well and united to create Hallownest, which was then connected through the Stagway transportation system seen in Hollow Knight.

However, there is more to the world than Hallownest such as the realm of Pharloom from Silksong. Just like The Weavers had come from outside of the realm, the Pale King did not originate from Hallownest but came from a Wyrm who died in Kingdom's Edge. Furthermore, Hollow Knight itself starts when the Knight descends onto Dirtmouth from someplace else. All of this indicates that there are more bugs out there and other civilizations outside of Hallownest. However, it is not clear if all of those civilizations are conscious as well.

After the Pale King created its kingdom, Hallownest was stricken by an infection produced by an old god: The Radiance. This infection started stripping away bugs from their consciousness, thus making them aggressive towards the Knight. In order to fight the infection, the Pale King came up with a plan to create a hollow knight who would trap the infection within. The Hollow Knight would then be sealed within a chamber to prevent the infection from spreading.

In order to seal the Hollow Knight, three beings went into eternal sleep to seal the chamber in which the Hollow Knight is locked. One of those Dreamers is Herrah the Beast. Herrah is the former ruler of Deepnest, meaning she comes from the Spider Tribe. Herrah makes a pact with the Pale King in which she offers to become one of the Dreamers in exchange for him to father a child with her: Hornet.

There are many things that set Hornet apart from the Knight and the other vessels the Pale King procreated with the White Lady to contain the infection. The first one is that, unlike the other vessels, Hornet was not intended to fight the infection. She was not created from void, which is confirmed by the fact that she is gendered, unlike the other vessels. Although this is a theory that has been going around on the internet for a while, it is mostly a unanimous belief that Hornet is not made from void, and it falls in line with the lore.

Even though Hornet is the heir of Deepnest, her royal blood seems to differ from that of other pale beings. On the one hand, she is the descendant of a king and a queen which means she is a royal as well. However, there is no indication that Herrah was a pale being herself, so there is not enough evidence to believe Hornet is one of these higher beings. Nonetheless, Hornet is obviously different from other bugs in Hallownest because of her extraordinary fighting skills, her background tying Hornet to the Spider Tribe and The Weavers, and the fact that she never loses consciousness despite the infection which makes Hornet one of the few characters with a clear personality.

Even though Hornet is different from the other vessels, they still share the same father. In that sense, Hornet does have an undeniable connection to the other vessels. This can be confirmed through the Sealed Siblings ending in which Hornet is trapped inside the Black Egg Temple together with the Knight. In this ending, the Knight takes the Hollow Knight's place in containing the infection while Hornet serves as the binding of the temple just like the Dreamers did before. The title in itself seems to indicate that, according to the lore, the Knight and Hornet are in fact siblings.
