When a game manages to crash an entire website when it gets an update, there's no denying its popularity. Friday Night Funkin' is a free-to-play rhythm game packed with charm where a character named Boyfriend raps and sings his way into being able to date Girlfriend.

With the game also being open source, many fans are creating mods to include unique songs, skins, and entirely new styles of gameplay into this popular indie game. These mods add a whole new life to the game and can be an amazing way for players to get more out of their favorite game.

How To Install Mods

Unsure how to actually install mods in Friday Night Funkin'? Here's a quick primer on how in just three easy steps.

  • Make sure the game is downloaded and installed.
  • Download the mod that will be installed and unzip the folder it comes in.
  • Copy the file from the assets folder in the mod, and paste them into the assets folder of the installed game. Make sure to click "replace the files in the destination" when prompted, or else the mod will not work.

That's it! Just turn on the game and the mod should work from here. For those still confused, here is a wonderful tutorial video from Im Just Gaming to help out further. Some mods also have specific executable files that will automatically install them into the game, so make sure to read the instructions on any download page.

10 Friday Night Funkin' Minus

Minus focuses on the skins of the game instead of trying to change any of the music in the game. The main goal of the mod was to make the characters look more like their battle icons and it manages to do this perfectly. This is an excellent mod for those dipping their toes into how modding works and for anyone who wants to give their new favorite game a visual overhaul. It is available for download here.

9 Monika Mod (Doki Doki Literature Club)

Just Monika. Just Monika. Just Monika. Wait, where were we again? Oh right! This mod is inspired by one of the most influential visual novels of the last decade — Doki Doki Literature Club. Monika is known for her singing in her own title, so it makes sense to see her in a musical battle against Boyfriend in Friday Night Funkin'.

The mod includes a new song called High School Conflict as well as new assets files to include Monika in the game and reskin Boyfriend to better match the pixel art the mod uses. It is available for download here.

8 Friday Night Funkin' Silva Pack

Want to rap against Luigi, Daft Punk, and even Big Chungus? The Silva Pack adds in more characters than Boyfriend can shake a mic at with many being downright hilarious as options to go up against in the game.

Minus the twerking Among Us astronaut that can replace Girlfriend (no, we're not making that up), the mod also adds a few remixes, new background art, and new tracks for hard and easy modes to certain songs. It is available to download here.

7 Sarvente's Mid-Fight Masses

Get ready to be hit by verses and we don't mean Bible verses! Sarvente's Mid-Fight Masses features a special storyline where Boyfriend and Girlfriend need to find a bathroom to use and run into a nun that wants to serve up some serious raps. It features four new songs and full cutscenes which makes it a wholly unique experience in Friday Night Funkin'. It is available for download here.

6 Vs Whitty

Brought to life after countless requests by fans, the Vs Whitty mod adds an entirely new week into the game where Boyfriend has to rap against Whitty in a back ally. With brand new assets, new music, and a serious difficulty spike, this mod is one anyone should pick up that really wants a challenge out of the game.

It also adds a new input system reminiscent of other rhythm games which fans of the genre may enjoy. It is available for download here.

5 Friday Night Funkin' - Neo

This mod completely reimagines Friday Night Funkin' in a futuristic neon style. It features new art assets alongside brand new songs for players to play through while getting to see a unique take on the characters they have come to know and love from playing through the game originally. The mod is still in progress to add the final weeks of the game, but for those who want an early look, it can be downloaded here.

4 Rapping Mario + Princess Peach As Girlfriend + Maro Beat Over Blammed

This one is technically three mods separately, but when combined together they become something truly special! The first mod is called Rapping Mario and features a sprite for boyfriend based on an old ad for Mario Pinball Land. The second mod, Princess Peach As Girlfriend, does exactly as its name implies — it makes Girlfriend look like Princess Peach.

These two mods are cute alone, but when combined with the Maro Beat Over Blammed mod, they become something truly special. Slapjack's signature song featuring sounds Mario makes in the games fit perfectly in the world of Friday Night Funkin' and players are sure to enjoy it.

Rapping Mario is available to download here, Princess Peach As Girlfriend is available to download here, and Maro Beat Over Blammed is available to download here.

3 Friday Night Funkin' - CG5 Edition

Charlie G. Five (A.K.A CG5) is a singer, songwriter, and music producer made famous on Youtube for his quirky songs about video games and other nerdy topics. This mod brings him to life in the game as a replacement to Daddy Dearest while adding in three new songs, two remixes, and background assets that match his unique sense of style. The mod is available for download here.

2 Hatsune Miku Mod

The Vocaloid sensation Hatsune Miku is no stranger to the world of video games so it only makes sense she would fit well into the world of Friday Night Funkin'. This mod adds in four new songs, an entire week specially coded into the game, and new vocals and tracks for Boyfriend to match its special aesthetic. It is available to download here.

1 B-Side Remixes

B-Side Remixes is widely considered the best mod available for Friday Night Funkin' in existence and what got most fans excited about the modding potential for the game. It replaces characters with special remixes of their music to keep the game fresh as well as some recolored assets that make it work better with other famous mods.

Since it's basically a second version of the game, loads of fans are giving it a try and it's hard to see its popularity dropping any time soon with more promised updates on the way. The mod is available for download here.
