Destiny 2 is finally bringing transmog to players, though it has been met with some heavy criticism for its overly complicated system. Capping the number of armor pieces a Guardian can transmog for free each season has further fueled the criticism behind the highly anticipated transmog feature in Destiny 2.
Players have been waiting years for Destiny 2 to bring a universal transmog system into the game. Universal Ornaments stood as a stepping stone for the upcoming transmog system, namedArmor Synthesis, giving players a taste of transmog but with some limitations. With a fully-featured Armor Synthesis transmog system coming to Destiny 2 with a cap, many Guardians may wonder how long will it take to convert all the armor sets currently in Destiny 2, into Ornaments used for transmog.
To find out how long this process would take Guardians must first know how many unique armor sets are currently available in the game. According to Light.GG, there are 763 armor pieces per character, including current ornaments. Subtracting the current 215 Ornaments leaves 548 pieces for each character for 1,644 total pieces of Armor that can be used in the Armor Synthesis system.
While some of the armor sets may look identical with slight variations in patterns, these 1,644 Armor pieces should all be unique and not reissued versions of the same gear. For example, the Ancient Apocalypse Helm has 5 versions in the database, but this breakdown will only count 1 version as the other duplicates would artificially inflate and skew the results. This breakdown also excludes Exotics since they are not part of the transmog system.
With 1,644 Armor pieces that players can convert with the Destiny 2 Armor Synthesis system, figuring out how long that will take becomes easier. Guardians are able to transmog 30 armor pieces per season (20 next season but 10 per season after that). Guardians need to subtract 60 pieces to account for the bonus in the first season, leaving 1,584 Armor pieces. It would take 53.8 seasons (52.8 plus 1 for the 60 pieces in the first bonus season) to convert all the current Armor in Destiny.

54 seasons (rounded up) with an average of 4 seasons per year means it would take Guardians 13 years and 6 months to finish converting all the Armor pieces currently in Destiny 2. This breakdown does not consider any new armor sets that Bungie releases into the game, however, any new armor sets will only increase this number by 1 season for every 10 new armor sets per class.
After looking at the numbers this way, it's clear why some Destiny players are upset about the cap on Destiny 2’s transmog feature. While most players would likely not convert all 1,644 Armor pieces into Universal Ornaments, some players feel they are entitled to the option of transmoging every armor piece they currently own.
Destiny 2’s Armor Synthesis transmog system will arrive with Season 14. It is unclear if any changes to the system will be made before its arrival into Destiny 2.
