Raritanium returns as a valuable, in-game currency in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and was revealed in the latest gameplay trailer.

It's been a great week to be a Ratchet and Clank fan. Insomniac has been rolling out loads of information concerning the series' upcoming sequel. There has been a lot to unpack. Among previews of new gameplay features, characters, and story elements, was confirmation that Raritanium would be returning as an in-game currency.

Raritanium, or raritanium ore, has appeared as a rare mineral throughout the series and is typically used as trade for valuable items and weapon upgrades. The latest Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart gameplay trailer showed Ratchet collecting a piece of the mineral while exploring Nefarious City, one of the alternate dimensions the characters will travel to. As for what the currency will be used for, that wasn't made clear in the footage. However, during a scene of Rivet shopping, an upgrade tab can be seen that may be where players can spend their Raritanium.

The return of Raritanium is just one small part of what was shown at this week's PlayStation State of Play, which was almost entirely dedicated to the sequel. The bulk of the presentation featured an extended Rift Apart gameplay trailer that previewed not just Ratchet, but also Rivet in action. To keep the characters from feeling too similar, and to spice things up for the sequel, each Lombax plays differently. Since Clank is going on his own adventures with Rivet, Ratchet has new platforming moves to navigate around maps without his robot pal. This includes a stylish wall run technique.

The trailer also previewed a handful of locations the pair will be exploring, all of which had glorious attention to detail and each felt like real, active worlds. The majority of Rivet's gameplay featured a lush alien planet filled with large creatures, swamps, and rideable bugs. Interestingly, despite being a new playable character, Rivet plays the more traditional way that players are used to, with Clank providing support.

Whether exploring untamed alien planets or sprawling, technologically advanced cities, Rift Apart utilizes the PS5's unique features to improve the gameplay experience. The console's SSD and processor will hasten load times to almost an instant. This comes in handy when players teleport to completely different locations, including other planets. The transition is seamless.

The game also makes heavy use of the DualSense controller features, using haptic feedback to make using weapons feel more immersive and adaptive triggers to allow players to use different abilities depending on how much force they apply. The series is known for its collection of strange weapons and the sequel is no different. A sample of weapons was shown in the gameplay trailer, but upgrades will likely change how they perform. That's where Raritanium may come into play.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will release on June 11, 2021, for PS5.
