The first season of Sea of Thieves is here. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the swath of new content, gameplay changes, fresh battle pass style progression system, and more. There is much to enjoy with Season One of Sea of Thieves, one of which is the addition of 120Hz.
The swash-buckling pirate action-adventure game has been going strong for nearly three years, but developer Rare promised big things for Sea of Thieves in 2021. That starts with a shift to a seasonal content plan. Not only will this allow for fans to have a good understanding of what to expect in terms of ongoing content, it will give the developers a better outline for the release structure of updates.

In terms of a big performance update with Season One of Sea of Thieves, the Xbox Series X version of the game now has a 120Hz Performance Mode. This will allow players to enjoy the game at 120 FPS at 1080p. In this mode, the game should run a bit smoother, which could be preferred when sailing through the open seas. The Xbox Series X does still support 4k at 60 FPS as well for those who prefer taking advantage of the resolution of their 4K television.
The patch notes do not mention the Xbox Series S when it comes to a performance update, so it seems players who use that console will still only have the 60 FPS at 1080p option. Sea of Thieves continues to grow, and Rare continues to add talent. What was a rather barebones game at launch has become much more fleshed out over time, and with the change to a seasonal structure, there is a lot to look forward to.
Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
