Since Returnal first launched, the game has gotten praised heaped on it. However, despite quite a bit of critical love for Housemarque's newest project, one big problem has popped up for some users.
It's been clear since Returnal released that the intention of the game is to be difficult. One aspect of the game being as difficult as it is, is that players don't get to carry much from one run to another. Having to start over is a rather big setback. Because of that, running into a glitch where players are not able to progress the character becomes a rather annoying issue.

While the positive reviews for Returnal have specifically pointed to the difficulty of the game being one of the reasons it's so good, a game-breaking bug like the one that's recently surfaced robs the title of its entertainment value. Gamertweak reports that more than a few players are reporting coming to a door in the map that won't open. At least one door reportedly won't open no matter what users try to do. Running into a door that won't open halts the ability to progress the character through the rest of the story.

Running into a door that won't open also becomes an issue because of the nature of Returnal. The map changes in each run, but the difficulty stays the same. That can mean that players will run into a door that won't open fairly early in their run, or they might run into one near the very end. Depending on how long it's taking someone to play the game, they could be dozens of hours into Returnal when they suddenly can't go any further.
At the moment, there are only two possible ways to work around this glitch. Because Returnal doesn't have the kind of save feature other games offer, one of the only real ways to get around the door glitch is to start all the way over. Any permanent upgrades a user has acquired will stick around. However, there's still a very good chance users are going to lose quite a bit of progress. There are some reports that the other way to avoid the door glitch is to only have Selene wear the standard suit and not the suit that is offered to those who pre-ordered the game.
At the moment, it doesn't appear that there is a quick fix for the bug, nor has Housemarque officially addressed the glitch yet. One possible feature developers have hinted at could make the bug slightly less annoying. There are some rumblings that Returnal is going to get a better save feature that could mean the bug won't set people back quite as far.
Returnal is currently available on the PS5.
