It's Thursday again, the day of the week Epic Games Store users usually look forward to. Thursday is the day in which the Epic Games Store cycles its weekly free game, retiring the past week's and introducing the next. Today, Epic Games revealed the new free game of the week is Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition. Epic Games Store users will have until February 4 at 8:00 a.m. PT to claim their free copy of Dandara before its price returns to normal.
Dandara is a 2D pixel art platformer and Metroidvania developed by Brazilian studio Long Hat House that released in early 2018. Dandara's gameplay was at first intended for mobile devices, making it a great option for platforms with touch screens. With the backing of publisher Raw Fury, however, Dandara was able to be release on PC and consoles including Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

As for what the Trials of Fear Edition means, Dandara was updated in early 2020 with a free Trials of Fear expansion. Not only did the Trials of Fear expansion add three new areas for players to explore, it also added a ton of new story content as well as a surprise new secret ending. Raw Fury repackaged Dandara as the Trials of Fear Edition so players would know they're getting the complete game.
In addition to releasing Dandara for free, the Epic Games Store also revealed the next game that will be available. Starting next week, Epic Games Store users will be able to claim a free copy of For the King. For the King is a hex-based strategy RPG with turn-based combat. Think of it as a mix between a great Dungeons and Dragons, a fantasy board game, and a BioWare CRPG like Baldur's Gate all wrapped up in an approachable package.
For the King will officially unlock on February 4 at 8:00 a.m. PT following the discontinuation of Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition's availability. It will remain free on the Epic Games Store until February 11, at which time a new and as-yet-unannounced PC game will unlock.
With the unlock of Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition and the confirmation of For the King as Epic's upcoming free game, one thread of speculation should now be put to bed; that being whether Epic will continue to offer free games week-to-week in 2021. The whole of January 2021 is now confirmed to have produced free games week-to-week. Without word from Epic to the contrary, PC gamers can probably look forward to continued free game releases for some time on the Epic Games Store.
