Compared to other races in Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls franchise, the Sload are shrouded in mystery. What should everyone know about Slugmen?

The Elder Scrolls series has introduced fans to many different races in the world of Nirn. Fans are already familiar with races like the High Elves, Nords, and Khajiit. There are uncommon but known races like the Maormer/Sea Elves from Pyandonea or the Ayeleids/Heartland High Elves that once ruled over Cyrodiil. Then, there are some rarely seen races like the Sload.

The Sload is a mysterious race from the island of Thras. They've had very little interaction with other races of Tamriel and have only appeared in two Elder Scrolls games. Very little is known about them and their homeland, but what other races do know is that they should be avoided if given the option. Here are ten things players should know about this slug-like race.

10 There Is A Type Of Sload That Lives Underwater

There is a variant of the Sload known as the Sea Sload. The Sea Sload are from the underwater kingdom Ul'vor Kus. Very little is known about the kingdom other than it might be located somewhere within the Sea of Pearls. The Sea Sload are more reclusive than their Sload cousins.

They are known to be skilled in using necromancy, alchemy, shadow magic, and mind control. They're able to summon deep sea creatures like the Yaghra as their servants and can also turn people into unwilling Shadow Clones slaves.

9 They Controlled An Island Outside Summerset For A Long Time

The Sload have been known to invade Tamriel from time to time. One of the most notable invasions is their siege of Skywatch, a city on the northern coast of Auridon. They conquered the small island of Errinorne Isle by using diseases. The Altmer that lived in Skywatch put together a defense and defended primarily from Hightide Keep. The defense held up until a Sload Warcaster consumed volatile alchemical ingredients and made himself into a living bomb. The Sload Warcaster launched himself at the defense, resulting in a massive explosion and causing the keep to fall in the sea.

While the Sload weren't able to hold the city of Skywatch for long, they held Errinorne Isle for decades. They were eventually wiped out by remnants of the All Flags Navy.

8 Sload Soap Is Made With An Unusual Ingredient

This item might sound familiar to fans of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Talking to Anarenen or Tendris Vedran will reveal that Sload Soap is made from non-sentient forms of the Sload. During their larvae or polwygle stage of life, mature Sload will use them to create Sload Soap. Not too surprising since the Sload are known for their lack of emotions and callousness to anyone, including their young.

This can be used as an alchemical ingredient in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to make a Restore Agility potion.

7 Notorious For Using Necromancy

The Sload are one of the few races that are notorious for using necromancy regularly. Airships owned by Sload are said to carry numerous corpses from Senchal back to Thras. They purchase slaves in Tear and kill them then later revived as thralls. It is also known that the Sload use massive amounts of their own larvae in necromantic rituals.

6 They Don't Worship Any Deity

Unlike most of the Tamrielic races that worship deities, the Sload don't appear to worship any god. Though there is some speculation based on their rituals that they do have some form of religion. They have been known to do sacrificial rituals to Daedric Princes, but this is usually done when they want something not out of worship.

They also have great respect for Mannimarco, the King of Worms. Many of the Sload considered him a hero and formed a sort of alliance with him. It is said that after Mannimarco ascended to godhood, some of the Sload communed with him.

5 A Sea Sload Took Over Cloudrest

In The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset, a Sea Sload named Z'Maja took over the city of Cloudrest. She possessed the Welkynars, a knightly sworn to protect Summerset. She turned three of the four knights into her shadow thralls and covered the city in a purple mist by using her shadow magic.

The player can help the surviving member, Olorime, reclaim the city and save her friends. Depending on the actions taken by players, all three of the knights can be saved or die after their shadow clones are destroyed.

4 Their Biology Is Unique

The biology of the Sload is unique compared to other Tamrielic races. It is not known how they reproduce and are believed to be hermaphrodites during their youth. They start off as tiny, non-sentient grubs then evolve into octopus-like creatures called polwygles.

Younger adult Sload usually lack self-reliance and don't appear on land. However, by the time they are mature enough to go on land, it is believed that their reproductive organs are absorbed into their bodies.

3 Mature Sload Can't Physically Do Much

After the Sload are fully matured, they aren't able to do much physically. Their weight is so great that they're completely immobile unless buoyed by water or move very slowly.

Most Sload travel by using the Recall spell to teleport themselves to their destination. They also have very limited grasping abilities which leave them unable to use tools.

2 Their Moral Compass Is Lacking

One thing that is known about the Sload to all of the other races: they have little to no morals. In the book, Pocket Guide to the Empire, 1st Edition: The Wild Regions, there is a small segment that talks about they are callous and selfish. They have no problems with blasphemy, theft, torture, or genocide. They are willing to break laws if it means achieving their goals or in their best interests. Adult Sload care very little for their offspring and usually don't show any interest in its fate.

The only time the Sload show any semblance of emotion is when they have been defeated or tricked. Because of this type of behavior, it is said in the book to avoid them and inform Imperial authorities if one is seen.

1 They Wiped Out Half Of The Population In Tamriel

The Sload are the sole creators of the deadliest disease Tamriel has ever experienced: the Thrassian Plague. This plague was created by the Sload during 2260 (some believe it started as early as 2220) of the First Era and didn't end until 582 of the Second Era. Half of the Tamrielic population were killed by the disease. It weakened Valenwood so much that it fell to the Empire during the Second Era. Elsweyr was also weakened and absorbed into the Empire.

To get vengeance on the Sload, the All Flags Navy was created. This navy was composed of ships and sailors of a majority of the Tamrielic races such as the Redguards, Bretons, Colovians, Elves, and Argonians. It is unknown how the All Flags Navy used unknown magics to sink Thras into the sea. This wouldn't last too long, as somehow Thras came back from down under, but its population haven't attempted a similar attack on Tamriel since then.
