Amidst all the positivity, Housemarque's latest title Returnal is facing some various glitches and bugs that the team is working on fixing.

The latest PlayStation 5 game Returnal is out and putting skills to the test. The roguelike shooter by Housemarque takes players through an endless cycle of unforgiving creatures and crossfire. But with various problems cropping up in Returnal, the team is currently looking into solutions.

After her ship Helios gets shot down over Atropos, the main character Selene must battle her way to the truth. Upon death or restarting the game, the player returns to the crash site and starts the cycle over again. Unfortunately, crashes and game breaking bugs are putting an early end to otherwise strong runs. Since there is no save mechanic, anyone subject to these problems merely has to accept a loss and start over.

The primary issue at hand seems to be the consistent crashes that are happening to some players. It seems like the crashes would have to do with the game itself, but the developers are not so sure. A spokesperson from Housemarque claims on Discord that they believe the problem stems from the pre-start system Sony built into the console. Talks are going on between the two parties to determine the root and fix it for players.

Those currently enjoying the game will be happy to hear that the developers are working on fixing other hitches too. Some players have encountered doors not opening in Returnal, but the team believes that problem is due to an interaction with a DLC costume. Some visual glitches, like a specific traversal barnacle not appearing, and other audio bugs are getting a look at as well. Housemarque has heard the cries for a save system loud and clear too, but it is unclear whether a change is en route or not.

Overall, it seems like Returnal is a solid representation of what the PS5 can do. Adaptive triggers and DualSense audio features take the game to the next level. Though the current issues are noticeable, they do not substantially detract from the game's narrative or design. Once the team irons out the bugs, the experience should be very engaging to both new and veteran roguelike players.

That said, some players may find disappointment with the game's state on release. Already facing the obstacle of the next generation rising in price, now the title contends with game breaking bugs. With no commitment on a save system, those hoping for an easy mode in Returnal will need to keep waiting. Nevertheless, any players hoping to jump in when the glitches are patched can rest easy knowing Housemarque is on the case.

Returnal is available now on PS5.
