Even 'The Falcon And The Winter Soldier' Writers Don't Know What Happened To Steve Rogers

All moon jokes aside, could Chris Evans really return to the MCU? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's writers certainly left the hatch open.

Despite The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally getting Sam Wilson to take Steve Rogers’ shield, little is known of the previous Captain America’s fate, and apparently, this top-secret information is only in the hands of the highest echelons of Marvel Studios since not even writer Malcolm Spellman knows the former Cap’s whereabouts.

With the MCU delving deeper into alternate timelines and multiple universes for Phase Four, Steve Rogers’ retirement plans have really drawn a lot of attention from Marvel fans. Although the old man Steve Rogers supposedly settled down with Peggy Carter before handing over the Captain America shield to Sam, it’s unclear whether this decision affected the multiple timelines Loki will be exploring or what really happened to the older Steve after Endgame.

During an interview with Inverse, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier writer Malcolm Spellman confessed he really doesn’t know what’s up with Steve, for all he knows even the show’s writers are also “wondering if Steve’s on the moon too.” According to Spellman he really was handed no further details on the former Captain America so it presented him and the other writers with the opportunity to really address the matter as they pleased.

The biggest takeaway for fans here is that they’re fully allowed to continue to speculate of Steve Rogers destiny from now on, at least until the matter becomes truly relevant for the MCU again. During the same interview, Spellman answered reporters' questions of whether they ever intended to use Spider-Man in the finale’s New York showdown, mostly highlighting that unless these cameos “occur organically” they are a no-go, meaning fans are unlikely to see many spectacular cameos.

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the only people privy to whatever happened to Steve are Sam and Bucky, who in turn have to laugh off suggestions that Captain America retired to a moon getaway. Considering Nick Fury is off on a mission of his own in space alongside the Skrulls and that Monica Rambeau was just recruited for that same purpose, the idea that old Steve Rogers would be joining them isn’t that far-fetched since, as Isaiah Bradley showed, that super soldier juice would keep his muscles going until his very last day.

Since Secret Invasion won’t be taking place at least until the tail end of the MCU’s Phase Four and Steve has only been referred to in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as “gone,” Chris Evans could really come back in some capacity, though probably not in Captain America 4 which is all about Sam. After all, if die-hard Marvel fans make such a big deal of Captain America’s retirement and his kissing sessions with Sharon Carter, it’s hard to imagine his passing wouldn’t be a huge event in Marvel’s world.
