Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the long-anticipated remakes of generation four, and fans are debating which version to pick.

It has been a long time coming since Pokemon fans called loudly for remakes of the fourth generation of critters, and lo and behold, the Pokemon Company delivered. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the first Pokemon games to ever be made by a studio that is not Game Freak, which is at the moment busy crafting the vibrant open world of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The remakes are now in development with ILCA Inc. working on the titles, and they should drop later on in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be faithful remakes according to Game Freak, and the games should retain all of the elements from the original titles, albeit in a slightly different graphic framework. Back when both were announced, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl sparked debates on whether players should pick one or the other, and if the games would eventually include features from Pokemon Platinum as well. Not much is known regarding the actual differences between the two remakes, but seeing as they are going to stay true to the originals, it is likely that Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will differ similarly.

Pokemon games are known to come as two or more titles per generation, each having a few assets that are unique to it, and that of course includes the little creatures one can encounter, catch, and train. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl did the same thing, with a set of Pokemon being limited to one game, and another being available only to the other. It's likely that Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will preserve the status quo of Diamond and Pearl, and that only a few little changes will be made.

As such, here is a list of the exclusive Pokemon that trainers could find in each game, starting with Pokemon Diamond:

  • Seel, Dewgong, Scyther, Scizor, Murkrow, Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar, Poochyena, Mightyena, Aron, Lairon, Aggron, Kecleon, Cranidos, Rampardos, Honchkrow, Stunky, Skunktank, and, naturally, Dialga.

As for Pokemon Pearl, players could find, instead:

  • Slowpoke, Slowbro, Slowking, Pinsir, Misdreavus, Houndour, Houndoom, Stantler, Spheal, Sealeo, Walrein, Bagon, Shelgon, Salamence, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Mismagius, Glameow, Purugly, and the cover Pokemon, Palkia.

These Pokemon were version-exclusive, and as such, they should help players delve into the game that contains the highest number of critters they like, or choose the version with a few Pokemon they wouldn't want to give up. This includes the cover Pokemon for each game; Dialga for Brilliant Diamond and Palkia for Shining Pearl, as they are legendaries only obtained through trading with another trainer. This is often a big factor in choosing which Pokemon game to grab, and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are no exception, making it a question of either aesthetic preference between the two or one based on the Pokemon's types.

Choosing one between Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl can also depend on other factors, though, like extra elements that are not necessarily tied to the generation four critters. Still, in the case that this list does not help, there are more differences (either likely or something that could be) between the games to hopefully ease and influence the final choice.

At this stage it is not known whether the aforementioned Pokemon (or more Pokemon from the Sinnoh Pokedex) will have regional forms introduced with Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, considering the concept was first introduced in generation seven. This remains a possibility, though, and it would be interesting to see new forms for beloved critters in the region of Sinnoh and see what they could look like and change into. If that proves to be the case, then it's likely that the regional variants will differ based on the version of the game.

Furthermore, considering how cooler the climate in the region of Sinnoh is, and a reduced amount of Fire Pokemon found in the wilds, it is likely that some critters of this type will inherit an Ice form. This could extend to Pokemon like the Pearl-exclusive Houndour and Houndoom, or Magby, Magmar, and Magmortar. Ponyta and Rapidash are unlikely to receive a regional form if that happens to be a thing in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as they just got a Galarian form in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Another thing that is pure speculation at this point is that Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl could bring back Pokemon from other generations, even ones that were not out yet back when Diamond and Pearl launched. Pokemon Sword and Shield did something similar in the form of starters from generation one and generation seven becoming available in the first DLC for the titles, Isle of Armor.

Beating Sword and Shield awards players with a Charmander to train, and in Isle of Armor, both Squirtle and Bulbasaur make a return. Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio also make a return if players manage to find 100 of the missing Halolan Diglett, and they are awarded based on the generation eight starter that they chose.

With this in mind, it's easy to see how more Pokemon could be added to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl beyond the ones from the original Pokedex of Diamond and Pearl. If that happens, it is likely that some of these friendly creatures will end up being version-exclusive for either Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl, and that may further complicate or facilitate the choice. Ultimately, this is mostly speculation, so the choice can be strategic or dictated by one's preferences. As such, which game to pick between Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is more plausible to be something every fan or new player should decide on their own.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will arrive in late 2021 on the Switch.
