The Maricopia Reef location in New Pokemon Snap has a decent amount of secrets to uncover, like what exactly is hiding beneath the massive whirlpool.

New Pokemon Snap is finally here after decades of waiting for a sequel to the charming Pokemon spin-off that released in 1999. Though New Pokemon Snap could have worked on past consoles, the game performs incredibly well on the hybrid console that is the Nintendo Switch.

Now that the game is here, players are exploring all of what New Pokemon Snap has to offer and uncovering its many secrets. One of the most tantalizing secrets hidden in New Pokemon Snap is just what exactly is heading beneath the massive whirlpool in Maricopia Reef.

RELATEDNew Pokemon Snap: Where to Find Lugia

First things first, players need to gain access to Maricopia Reef to encounter the whirlpool. Unfortunately, unlocking Maricopia Reef (Day) is not enough. Players are going to need to unlock Maricopia Reef (Evening) to find out what is hiding in the whirlpool. To unlock Maricopia Reef (Evening) players must first complete the main story of New Pokemon Snap.

After completing the main story of New Pokemon Snap, players should see a message that will notify them that the course is unlocked. Luckily for players who are eager to discover this secret, it should only take about 10 hours or so to mainline the story content offered up in New Pokemon Snap. Finding and uncovering everything the game has to offer should double that time, but it isn't required to get to the whirlpool in Maricopia Reef. Alternatively, players can simply enjoy their time through the game at their own pace, as they should reach the whirlpool naturally with enough time invested.

Now, reaching the whirlpool in Maricopia Reef is simple enough. Players should encounter it naturally near the beginning of the course. Upon arriving at the whirlpool, players want to start hurling Fluffruit and Illumina Orbs into the whirlpool. After enough have been tossed in, a Blastoise should rise out of the center of the whirlpool and take off using jets of water.

Additionally, players can get Blastoise to rise out of the whirlpool in a different way. During the course, players can encounter a Squirtle in the Maricopia Reef course standing on a tall rock by the whirlpool. If players hit the Squirtle with a Fluffruit, a Wingull should knock the Squirtle into the whirlpool. After spiraling around the whirlpool for a bit, the Blastoise should once again rise out of the whirlpool and take off just like before. While admittedly a bit anti-climactic, it's still a nice secret that players certainly have to put in a bit of work to see unfold.

New Pokemon Snap is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
