While the majority of side quests players will accept in NieR Replicant involve gathering certain materials for clients, a significant portion of quests involve mending or rekindling relationships. In "The Despicable Man" side quest, NieR Replicant players are tasked with locating the boyfriend of a shopkeeper in the village who went missing more than five years ago.

To begin the quest, after the time skip, speak to the young lady located across from the blacksmith at the south end of the village. Unfortunately, players are given limited clues as to the boyfriend's location, apart from the fact that he wears a gold necklace.

From the shopkeeper's location, head to the Southern Plains gate and speak to the guard on the left. After speaking with the Southern Plains Guard, head to the Northern Plains gate and speak with the guard on the left-hand side.

The Northern Plains guard will inform the player that he saw the man with the gold necklace heading to the Forest of Myth. Head to the Forest of Myth via the Northern Plains, and speak with the first NPC on the right upon entering.

When players bring up the man with the gold necklace, the villager will become irate, claiming that he ran off with his wife and was last seen in Seafront. Travel to Seafront, and head towards the fountain located next to the post office.

Near the fountain where players obtained "The Scattered Cargo" sidequest, speak with the lady who is by the water faucets. The lady will inform the player that she was also in a relationship with the gold necklace man, but, has not seen him for over five years.

Next, head to the post office, and speak with the postman outside the entrance. The postman claims that the man headed north after he was caught selling counterfeit goods.

From the post office, head to the shop district of Seafront, and speak to the man located above the Material shop vendor. The man claims that last he heard, the man with the gold necklace took off for the Junk Heap years ago.

Head to the Junk Heap and speak with Gideon. After questioning Gideon about the man, players will come to the realization that the man whose body was found with Gideon's mother years ago, was the gold necklace man.

Once players have learned this final piece of information they can now head back to the village and turn in the quest to the client. After informing the lady of her boyfriend's fate, players will complete the quest and receive a reward of 15,000 gold.
