Some Outriders Players Are Still Waiting on Inventory Wipe Restorations, But That May Be for the Best

Outriders had a bit of a rocky launch, with victims of the inventory wipe bug that deleted their gear still waiting for item restoration.

People Can Fly and Square Enix's Outriders released a little over one month from now, and despite its overwhelming success, the game had a bit of a rocky launch. Outriders was available as a free demo for gamers to play before it came out, and during that demo period, some participants noticed a bug was causing their inventory to be wiped. All the gear and weapons the character was wearing or wielding at the time had evidently disappeared from players' accounts. People Can Fly was very communicative and straightforward with the community, and it worked hard to fix the issue as soon as possible.

By the time the bug was fixed, several players had already lost their items, and the developer decided to issue a restoration of lost items so that no one ended up losing time and effort during the demo. Things eventually returned to normal, and Outriders finally launched. However, during its launch week, people started experiencing the same inventory wipe bug from the demo. The developers applied a patch that was supposed to fix some of the server errors that players were encountering, but what happened was that most matchmaking activities resulted in the gamers losing all they had prior to the issues.

The dreaded inventory wipe bug made players afraid to play the game because of the likelihood of having all their items disappear, which immediately became a priority for both People Can Fly and Square Enix to solve. They managed to do so by adding a layered system of protection against the issue, and tested if it worked over a whole weekend.

After that, seeing how the issue was mostly solved and the item restoration process had already begun, the developers confirmed that the following patches would have remedied the situation. Players were divided into groups for the restoration phase, so some will likely have to wait more than others.

Some players are reportedly still waiting for their items to be rightfully restored, which is especially frustrating considering that the wait may be long, and that they may need their lost equipment to farm for more. People Can Fly promised that all the armor pieces and weapons lost to the inventory wipe bug would be restored as "god rolls," meaning, perfectly rolled and optimized versions of said items.

This was to prevent players who had farmed for those rolls to get randomly generated items that were not at all what they lost, to begin with. Instead, this solution allowed them to provide all players with the best gear they could ever find once the restoration was complete, which was also an apology of sorts for the issues gamers had to endure.

Regardless of how difficult and infuriating it can be to still have to wait for the items to be restored, this is probably the lesser of two evils. This is due to the fact that rushing things could result in worse scenarios than the current one. The inventory bug could end up returning in some form, or new bugs could be introduced like the damage mitigation issue that was introduced with the most recent patch.

Overall, the solution of restoring god rolls to all players affected by the inventory wipe issue is a good one, and it's probably best to wait a bit longer now than going through other issues later. Here's hoping that Outriders will finally be freed from disruptive bugs such as these and that every player will end up with their rightfully earned equipment.

Outriders is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
