Fans are speculating about what Spider-Man 2's potential release date could be, but a likely release window seems pretty obvious at the moment.

Insomniac Games has proven itself to be one of Sony's top first-party studios, creating quality titles and giving birth to some of the most iconic PlayStation mascots, with the likes of Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank. The recent success of Spider-Man has reaffirmed the studio's position, and fans are eagerly waiting in anticipation for the next game in the series.

While the studio itself has mostly remained tight-lipped about Spider-Man 2, it seems that there are quite a few tidbits of information available that should help in making an educated guess regarding the game's release date/window.

Insomniac has quite the track record when it comes to developing multiple titles across a long period of time. The studio has consistently juggled multiple titles in development at any given time in its history, and almost each of the studio's high-profile releases has garnered great critical acclaim and commercial success. Marvel's Spider-Man underwent development in 2014, and the studio released Ratchet and Clank for the PS4 in 2016 before finally releasing Spider-Man in 2018.

This does make it hard to predict the studio's release schedules, as Insomniac Games quickly followed the release of Spider-Man with Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a launch title for PS5 (although the game is available for PS4 as well). The studio has also been working towards Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which is due to release next month, and rumors indicate that a Sunset Overdrive sequel might also be in the works. However, reports regarding the game's development and Sony's track record with respect to exclusives might hint at something useful.

Spider-Man 2 hasn't been announced yet, but reports indicate that the game is already in development, from as early as 2019. The game is also said to have entered full production in 2020. However, Spider-Man's voice actor Yuri Lowenthal has stated that no voice work has been done, and Insomniac Games is presumably working on gameplay development. Additionally, the game's PS5 exclusivity might indicate that the team might work on the engine to make the most out of the new hardware.

Sony has a track record of generally releasing two big-name exclusives each year, with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West probably slated for a July-September release date. The publisher has a lot to offer in the near future, with the upcoming God of War "Ragnarok" sequel potentially eyeing for the April 2022 slot (despite still being listed for 2021 release) and Gran Turismo 7 reserved for July-September. This does put Spider-Man 2 on a release window of perhaps 2023 or beyond, which seems likely given all of the other already confirmed PS5 games coming soon.

A full-fledged sequel would likely take 4-5 years to develop exclusively for the new hardware, which falls in line with the studio's first Spider-Man game, and putting the sequel in a position for release around July-September of 2023. While that leaves another potential AAA exclusive accompanying Spider-Man 2 in 2023, it seems that Forspoken (previously known as Project Athia) should be filling in the shoes for the April 2023 spot. However, upcoming projects from Naughty Dog could very well accompany Spider-Man's sequel as well.

Spider-Man 2 is rumored to be in development for PS5.
