Updated May 8th by Mason Sansonia: Pokemon Sword and Shield is considered a mixed bag across the Pokemon fan community. Many were unhappy at the many Pokemon cut and from the initial game and (sometimes) repackaged through the DLC. Others were swept up in the new region's struggles and had a blast with the new systems. Easily the biggest of these new features, both figuratively and literally, is Dynamax, which temporarily grants Pokemon huge stats, forms, and attacks in battles. No doubt Dynamax will play a central role in the upcoming Sword & Shield manga, but it already plays a huge role in Sword & Shield's endgame: Dynamax Adventures.
Dynamax Adventures feature in the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield. On top of the return of the frightful Ultrabeasts, Dynamax Adventures are one of the biggest draws of the DLC as a whole.
Currently exclusive to the Crown Tundra DLC, these are arguably one of the most innovative modes in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Considering how much these games innovate on the Pokemon formula already, that's saying a lot. There's a lot to unpack about the Dynamax Adventures, so here's a little guide on how to get started and join more Adventures after the first one.

Players don't really have to find their way to Dynamax Adventures: they will be guided there. Shortly after arriving in the Crown Tundra, players will be guided to the Max Lair. This is where all Dynamax Adventures occur, and players will be guided through their first one. It's in these caves that players can encounter and catch legendaries like Raikou, Entei, and Suicune.
Dynamax Adventures are a series of battles against Dynamax Pokemon as the player(s) go deeper into the Max Lair.
- Players cannot bring their own Pokemon and must rent some at the start of the cave. The assortment available is random.
- The exact Pokemon fought will not be known until the player is staring them down. That said, players can get some idea of what they're going to fight from the Pokemon's silhouette and will always know the typing of the Pokemon in the lair.
- The last Pokemon will always be a Legendary and is always known to the player. On top of Legendaries, the catch rate of shinies is very high in Dynamax Adventures.
Initiating a Dynamax Adventure is easy.
- Talk to the Scientist at the front of the cave and rent a few Pokemon, (players can't bring their own) to begin. However...
It can be a bit more confusing to join a Dynamax Adventure with friends.
- To start, the host player must talk to the scientist at the Max Lair.
- Before hitting Invite Others option, they must press + and choose to set a Link Code.
- After creating the code, make sure everyone in the party enters that code when joining matchmaking.
- Hit Invite Others and only players in the party should be paired together. From there it's smooth sailing and lots of Legendary catching.
Of course, the whole process is not really necessary if players don't mind who they play the Adventure with.
- Simply choosing Invite Others will open the player's game up to whoever comes. This is riskier, since players must make sure Dynamax opponents are defeated quickly and with minimal faints. But if players aren't afraid of their rando teammates making some Dynamax Adventure beginner mistakes, they can jump right in using this method.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are available on Nintendo Switch.
