Zoë Kravitz will be playing a very different Catwoman from her past superhero roles, as new teasers from The Batman emerge.

It takes a lot to make a great Batman film and director Matt Reeves certainly knows it, that’s probably why The Batman will see him bring some of Gotham’s most iconic bad guys to fight Robert Pattinson’s caped crusader. Among those is a young Selina Kyle for whom the studio just released a featurette giving some insight into this particular incarnation.

Aside from Catwoman, Pattinson’s moody Batman is set to duke it out giant against Gotham crime boss Carmine Falcone, as well as more eccentric colorful villains like The Penguin and The Riddler, when The Batman finally lands in theaters on March 4, 2022. Standing out from that select lineup from the Rogues Gallery is Catwoman, a morally ambiguous character whose seductive charm can’t even be avoided by Batman himself.

In this new exclusive look, Reeves and producer Dylan Clark talk about the kind of Robin Hood role that’s usually associated with Selina Kyle, who this time around will be played by Zoë Kravitz. As Reeves puts it, by opting to go with a script starring Batman in his early days but still past his origin story, the birth of each of his antagonists can be explored to greater lengths, as is shown in the brief clip of Catwoman fighting Batman dressed in the kind of getup that suggests she’s far from reaching her final form.

Although the safe-cracking part of the clip was partly shown in The Batman’s trailer, the footage of Catwoman swiftly moving around, riding a motorcycle, facing off against Batman is all new. The Batman is set to revolve around Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting adventures inspired by the “Year Two” series of comics in DC’s Earth-2, which would explain his existence apart from the DCEU’s Justice League in the condemned Snyderverse.

Zoë Kravitz already has multiverse superhero credentials given that she not only voiced Catwoman in The Lego Batman Movie, but also played Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The Batman’s grim realistic setting is definitely a stark departure from those two characters, as this Catwoman is described more like a grown-up version of the teenage Selina Kyle that appeared in Gotham.

The movie is also completely unrelated to Michael Keaton’s appearance in The Flash, though The Batman will carry a big load on its shoulders as DC continues to play catch up with Marvel.

The Batman is currently under reproduction and scheduled for release on March 4, 2022.
