The final moments of Returnal take place deep in the Abyssal Scar. With every descent the player makes, they are likely wondering just how much further they can go, but they'll have to venture back into the depths twice to get the secret ending. In order to unlock the secret ending, players will need to collect Sunface Fragments, one from each biome, and then revisit Selene's house one last time before defeating the final boss once again to see the secret ending.

Before Returnal players start searching for these elusive Sunface Fragments, it's important to understand the requirements to make them spawn. The most important thing is that players need to have already beaten Act 2 once, but they also need to have seen all five house sequences as well. This is a minor spoiler, but players will know they've completed the last house sequence when they learn the truth about what caused Helios to crash.

As this is the final area in the game, players should already have all the Xenotech Devices, but for good measure getting this piece requires the Delphic Visor. This is arguably one of the most difficult fragments to find because not only is it in the final biome, but it also isn't very easy to recognize what room connects to the Sunface Fragment room. There's also a point of no return in the Abyssal Scar that isn't present in any of the other levels so far. It's important to remember that the Sunface Fragment is found before the first big drop during the level. After players drop down, they won't be able to come back.

While traversing the vast underwater spaces of the Abyssal Scar, players will want to keep an eye out for containers. Notably, one container should show up on the map as though it is floating off in the sea. Players will need to jump across a gap to get to this container, and from here they should be able to see a Luminescent Orb. The container is usually locked, but rather than open it players simply need to look out into the expanse to find the orb. Shoot it to spawn platforms leading off in that direction.

Hop across and players should find the sixth and final Sunface Fragment. At this point, players will need to return to the Echoing Ruins in order to see the sixth house sequence and then come back to the Abyssal Scar and beat the last boss again. For players that accidentally continued too far and missed the Sunface Fragment, dying and returning with the a Reconstructor is the only way to get back up.
