Destiny 2 has launched Season of the Splicer, and so far, it looks like am interesting one in terms of new content and where the story is going. The Season of the Splicer is accompanied by many returning legends from Destiny, be it in terms of old weapons being reintroduced in Destiny 2, like the Hung Jury scout rifle, or be it the Vault of Glass raid, which fans have been asking Bungie to add to Destiny 2 for years now. Not only that, but the Season of the Splicer brings new challenges like the Override 6-player matchmade activity, which launches a Vex simulation in which players have to retrieve encrypted data for Mithrax to decypher or the Expunge weekly event.
Override is not merely a new activity, but it is part of the storyline from this new Destiny 2 season. The premise of the Season of the Splicer is that the Vex have managed to plunge the Last City into a simulation in which the sun doesn't shine on humanity's last bulwark, effectively living in permanent darkness. Because of this, Guardians follow Ikora Rey's plan, which is to find an Eliksni splicer called Mithrax to help reveal the Vex's secret and end their simulation.

Players first meet Mithrax on Europa, where he was last seen helping refugee Fallen from the House of Light, to which he is Kell, meaning they still worship the Traveler and its Light despite it abandoning the Eliksni a long time ago. He and his people are hunted down by both the Vex and other Fallen who are Eramis' loyalists, though, so guardians have to shoot their way through to Mithrax's signal. The Splicer sends Destiny 2 Guardians into what looks like a simulation, but Mithrax reveals that it's actually the Vex's realm itself. He then asks players to find the curator and kill it to steal the codes it keeps stashed away. Guardians find their way back to Mithrax, and he asks them and Ikora for protection, to which the Warlock agrees by inviting the Splicer and the members of his House within the Last City.
Mithrax and his followers are astounded at Ikora's offer because this is the first time in mankind's history that Eliksni were invited to join humans, Awoken, and Exos in the Last City and into the HELM as well. This is pretty significant, especially considering that there is now a whole wing dedicated to Eliksni allies in the Hub, meaning that the Fallen are likely here to stay as permanent allies. Despite this, there are people who don't approve of Ikora's call, and they feel like helping the Eliksni will endanger their own kind, instead.
The scene where Destiny 2's Osiris and Lakshmi-2, the leader of the Future War Cult and City representative, greet Mithrax and his people is quite telling. Osiris tries to be diplomatic and is probably understanding because he, too, was an outcast for a long time. Lakshmi-2, on the other hand, is extremely cold and hostile towards Mithrax, showing how much she despises the Eliksni out of fear they will cause trouble.
Eventually, Guardians are free to explore the new Eliksni Quarters within the Last City, where they can find several messages left from Eido, Mithrax's daughter.

Eido reveals that she and her father each carry out one of the ancient duties of their House, respectively the Scribe and the Splicer. Eido, being a Scribe, has the duty of telling the history of her House. She thinks the Guardians take the gift of Light and resurrection for granted, wasting it on sports, like in Destiny 2's Crucible. She also says that if Eliksni were ever granted the same gift as mankind, then they would never do the same.
Eido also talks about the Whirlwind, back when the Traveler abandoned her kind and fled, and how the Eliksni scattered across the stars in their ships when Riis, their homeworld, fell and they were forced to live in the Ketches. She proceeds by saying that the Guardians cannot be stopped at all, even by death, and they are monsters in the tales told to Eliksni hatchlings. This goes to show how Guardians operate in a grey area and how, even though they are blessed by the Light, they are not necessarily good.
Players are then able to talk to Mithrax via a Splicer Servitor located in the HELM, and they obtain the Paradrome Cube and Splicer Gauntlet. He tells players to retrieve data from the Vex, so he can help them free mankind from the Endless Night. He says that the Vex seek to use their simulation to drain the Light from the City, so Guardians should disrupt their network. A radio message from Crow becomes available, and the Guardian says that the Eliksni deserve a chance and that they are more like humans than one would otherwise think.
Guardians will then talk to Lakshmi-2's hologram as she says how Future War Cult have often used Vex technology to catch glimpses of the future, and then she says that she foresaw something terrible: dark skies, shouting, gunfire, and in the center of the City, the Fallen from the House of Light. This is Lakshmi-2's vision, and she says she foresaw the Red War too. She was not believed back then but won't remain silent now.
After that, a bittered Lakshmi-2 talks over the radio about how the Traveler has protected mankind all this time, but people like Ikora Rey are jeopardizing everything only to protect the Fallen. She goes on to say how they are wasting precious resources on their enemies, further demonstrating how she intends to do everything in her power to interfere with Ikora's plan, proving to be a troublemaker. This is the story of the Season of the Splicer thus far, but it's likely that there will be much more to it in the coming weeks.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
