Sony confirms that some PlayStation Plus subscribers will be getting a free bonus game along with the other announced titles.

While there have been some exceptions, generally the free PlayStation Plus games in any given month are the same in all regions. However, Sony sometimes adds some extra PlayStation Plus games for subscribers in certain regions, which is exactly what it's done for PlayStation Plus subscribers in Japan, giving those in the country an extra free game next month.

Three of the free PS Plus games in Japan are the same as the free PS Plus games for February 2021 in other regions. This includes Control: Ultimate EditionConcrete Genie, and the PlayStation 5 exclusive game Destruction AllStars. However, PlayStation Plus subscribers in Japan can also add Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to their collection once February 2021's free games are made available in the country.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, for the uninitiated, was a Kickstarter-funded game from Castlevania developer Koji Igarashi. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night reviews were mostly positive at the time of its release, with many in agreement that it successfully recreated the classic Metroidvania style of gameplay that fans of the Castlevania franchise enjoy. It's unclear why Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is being made free to PS Plus subscribers in Japan and not other regions, but this isn't the first time Sony has done this.

In fact, Sony did something similar with the free PS Plus games for January 2021. While Japan didn't get a bonus free game, Sony did release a bonus free game to PS Plus subscribers in Spain, letting them claim Dawn of Fear on PS4 along with the other free games. It will be interesting to see if Sony has similar plans to give certain regions a bonus game when it announces the free PS Plus games for March 2021, though fans will have to wait a month for that announcement.

Some fans in regions outside of Japan may be upset that they are missing out on the bonus game, though that's not the only controversy surrounding the PS Plus February 2021 games lineup. Others are upset that Control: Ultimate Edition is a free PS Plus game, as it just recently went on sale. Despite this, Sony is not offering refunds to anyone that purchased Control: Ultimate Edition prior to the PS Plus announcement.

Despite some controversies, the general consensus seems to be that Sony has a strong lineup for PlayStation Plus in February. Control won multiple Game of the Year awards in 2019, and Concrete Genie reviews were mostly positive as well. Destruction AllStars is a brand new, unproven entity, but its status as a PlayStation 5 exclusive certainly makes it more appealing. PS Plus subscribers can try them all out come February 2.
