The highly anticipated sequel to the 2020 smash hit Sonic the Hedgehog wrapped principal photography in just two months. The blockbuster based on Sega’s best-selling video game franchise of the same name will be released in theatres next spring.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog film was an unexpected winner for Paramount Pictures. The Jeff Fowler-directed film earned $319.7 million worldwide off an $85 million budget and had the largest opening weekend for a video game-based film. The action-adventure comedy film saw Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) come to Earth and help his new best friend Officer Tom (James Marsden) defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Sonic ended with the blue speedster sending Robotnik to a mushroom planet and Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) emerging from a ring portal.

In 2020, Paramount announced that Fowler would direct the sequel, while Sonic writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller were returning to pen the script. Schwartz, Carrey, and Marsden are also reprising their roles from the original. Fowler recently took to Twitter to announce that the sequel finished filming in Vancouver. "That's a wrap in Vancouver! Thank you to all the amazing cast/crew in this city...so much incredible talent helping make [Sonic the Hedgehog 2] truly special (and spoiler alert... EPIC!)," wrote Fowler. The filmmaker teased that the film will take place in another dimension, as he was sitting in a field of tall mushrooms.
Schwartz congratulated the Sonic 2 Crew on social media and revealed that it’s now time for him to record the voice-over for the lead character. Despite wrapping filming in just two months, the film is far from finished, as many characters have to be inserted through special effects and CGI. The Blue Blur notably underwent a $5 million redesign following the negative reaction to Sonic's look in the original film’s trailer.
While the sequel's plot has been kept under wraps, there are reports that Knuckles the Red Echidna and Tails will have a significant role in the film. Set photos posted on social media showed a member of the crew using scale models to represent Sonic and Knuckles. Knuckles was created by Takashi Yuda and first appeared in 1994’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The beloved character was the guardian of Master Emerald and could glide and climb up walls. Earlier this year, there were rumors that Aquaman star Jason Mamoa was the frontrunner to voice the side-kick.
Fowler previously asserted that his focus was on setting up Sonic’s backstory and his rivalry with Robotnik before introducing supporting characters. It remains unseen if characters like Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, and Espio, will be featured in the upcoming sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently scheduled to be released on April 8th, 2022.
